Aw, that makes me sad. But she went out in the same unflashy, unassuming way she came in. She is a class act, though, and that will always be missed.

Because it can't be said enough. I'll miss her lovely game too.

I'll just say the same as everyone else about Mauresmo: not surprised, but sorry to see her go.
Always liked both her and her game, fun to watch.

I adore the Spanish boys. I really do but could someone please stage a hair intervention. Lopez's hair was looking good but now he's started gelling it in to weird shapes. Verdasco seiously needs a haircut. He's growing big cosmo girl hair. Nadal needs to stop wetting his hair every time he is having a picture taken and Ferrer, well his might be the best of a bad lot but he's had the same non-hair-doo for about 6 years so time to change it up. www.gettyimages.com/detail/93686079/AFPBye Momo. I'll miss you.

Heh, it's like they don't want to be the best-looking team in sports. Too bad boys! The title is yours no matter what your hair and baggy track suits say. Awwww, there are some really cute pictures in the photo gallery on the Davis Cup site but my favorite is the one with both teams sitting in armchairs on the clay court with the big-ass trophy in the middle (the link goes straight to that picture). It's a very weird talk show. Czech team looks so happy and relaxed and, in the not really news segment, Tomas is such a cutie. The picture of him and David is adorable. I know I watch too much tennis--I like the three umpires who are officiating.

I know that feeling. When I came back from Roger's Cup my tennis friends thought I was nuts because of my excitement at seeing my favorite umpire - Mohammed Layhani. I took a bunch of pictures of him too.

I can't believe that Ferrer came back in the match against Stepanek. I'm a huge Ferrer fan but I felt really bad for Stepanek. Nadal was a one man cheering squad. He's like an excited 5 year old jumping up and down and yelling. He must be a blast at soccer (football) matches.

Goodbye Momo. I saw her play at the 06 Australian Open. You could tell she was playing some seriously good tennis. It was breathtaking to watch, ESPECIALLY that backhand.
Loved her grace on and off court. I hope her all the best in her retirement.

I agree, mpol, the '06 Aussie Open performance (notwithstanding the retirement, don't get me started) was great. Momo went out there and smothered Justine from the very first point. I remember my excitement level rising as I quickly started to realize that Amelie might really win her first major. I was really happy that she got to consolidate the win at Wimby that year, because she really deserved an unqualified win at the Australian Open.
I'm probably repeating myself, but I really have a lot of admiration for her.

Yeah, I too will miss Mauresmo. Such a great, cool lady on and off the court. Her Wimbledon title is one of my all-time favorite GS victories by any player, because it was such vindication after the mess at the Australian -- she showed all those doubters that she could beat Henin under any circumstances and fully earned both of those titles. I hope she has a great post-tennis life, enjoying her motorcycles and her wine (although not at the same time).

Am I the only one watching the Davis Cup? Great win for Spain. The Lopez/Verdasco hug when the won was a classic. Verdasco was just in tears and wouldn't let go of Lopez. Speaking of Lopez - he finally shaved the porn facial hair off. Massive cheers for Ferrero and Robredo when they came out on the court. Does anyone know why, when they are celebrating, they bounce up and down?

And Serena shows YET AGAIN why I am not a fan. I saw this on Forty Deuce. Wish I hadn't, because now I'm seeing red. (However, my anger will not lead me to threaten with a racquet, tennis ball or anything else.)

Eh. I read the whole statement that she made, and, as usual with this issue, I am ambivalent. I agree with her that the level of outrage surrounding her actions (as bad as her actions were) were magnified because she's a woman. I also can understand how she might feel a little put-upon given the history of high-profile bad calls she's experienced in her career. I, however, disagree that what she did is comparable to what Roger did, and I think her comparison to Jeff Tarango (the HE at Wimbledon) is flawed since he ended up being banned from Wimby for a time after the incident, and couldn't compete there the next year. Initially, I rolled my eyes when she talked about being robbed of the 2004 US Open and I still think it should have been worded differently, but given who she would have played if she had won that match against Capriati (Dementieva and Kuznetsova who had never beaten her at that point), I think odds-makers at the time would have been hard pressed to make Serena anything other than the overwhelming favorite. Over all I think it seemed to give an honest account of how she must have felt without denying that what she did was wrong. Has anyone heard about what happened to JMdP? After his exo against Gonzo, some thuggy types cornered him in the locker room and, based on what I've read, intimidated him into giving them a shirt and some money. He has pledged never to go back to that facility again. The article, which is electronically translated from Spanish, can be seen here. If my understanding of the situation is correct, I really feel bad for him. He seems like a pretty sensitive individual, and it sounds like it was a threatening situation.

Wish I read spanish because that translation was a bit hard to understand. Seems like an awful situation though. Locker rooms should be for players, coaches and trainers only--the players should feel as comfortable and free from everything as possible there.
While I like the idea of giving the fine to charity I cannot side with Serena for anything else in that diatribe. Does she honestly believe it was saying "fuck" that got her the fine? Delusional. And since she was pretty gracious after the fine came down I have to believe that this turnaround means that she's got some entourage members talking in her ear--and she's listening. UGH! It was such a non-punishment that I thought should have been effective. Would she have preferred to keep her money and be suspended from a slam? She doesn't think that part of Tarango's punishment was worth mentioning, so maybe that wouldn't have bothered her. Of course that would have been worse to her! She's just listening to people who are feeding her crap. She probably doesn't even know that part of his punishment.
And why would yelling at the chair ump be worse than yelling at the line judge? Does she think a line judge isn't as worthy as a chair ump? She could not have meant to put that in there either.
