Poor Sloane. I like her, but you don't often see such a dramatic and lightning-fast switch from being little miss sunshine to a pouty petulant mean girl. It's especially bad because I saw Fed cup, and they (especially Serena) seemed to go out of their way to show her some love during the victory lap in spite of the fact that she played badly. Obviously the real Sloane is somewhere in the middle, and the press attention isn't doing her any favors. I hope she finds some balance, and I hope the press doesn't make it too difficult for her, because stuff like this looks bad whether you like the Williams sisters or not. I will say that this at least seems age-appropriate.
The funny thing is, whether you like Serena or not, I don't think that many people "think she's so friendly."

I never thought I'd say this about Sloane but she is not that bright. Yeah, Sloane did beat Serena but everyone knows Serena was injured that day - Sloane was a beneficiary as far as I'm concerned and has been forced to come down to earth since. I imagine Serena is just shaking her head and feeling sorry for Sloane. There may be a time in the future where answering questions this way is more appropriate (though please don't use the Jimmy Connors model cuz that's repulsive). I think Jelena Dokic needs to have a chat with Bernard Tomic on screwed-up fathers. The similarities between these two are rather eerie.

I'm not clear whether the assault on Drouet occurred in Monte Carlo and was part of the incident where JT hit BT? If so, why is JT to appear in court in Madrid? Also, where did he serve the jail time? And which incident (if there was more than one) did Tipsaravic and Dolgopolov witness?
Whatever the details, I feel free to hope that he dies a sudden and excruciatingly painful death alone in a hotel room. Soon.

Here's a bit of a follow-up (post court appearance) for the Tomic mess.. What an ass that man is. And poor Tennis Australia. They've had a very tough time of it these past few days. R.I.P. Brad Drewett. And ewwwwwww! to Jimmy assface Connors. What he obviously didn't learn from the Agassi book is that the big revelation has to be about yourself, not someone else.

Whoa, just watched Dimitrov take out Djoker in Madrid. I didn't think he had enough power in his game to play with the big boys, but guess I was wrong. A great effort. He cramped several times during the match, and Djoker turned his ankle quite badly in the second set, but both persevered, and it was a great match. Congrats to Grigor. (I didn't realize he was still only 21. He's been around for a while, and I thought he was older.)
From Twitter: 1) Djokovic looked to be screaming vulgarities at crowd between sets in Serbian. Can't imagine last time he played in atmosphere so hostile.
2) ''SUCK MY ****'' , words from the world No1 to the crowd as he sits after taking the set
3) I once saw Grigor go to town on a huge ice cream sundae at Applebees in Mason. It is the image of him that lives me to this day.

More from the Sloane/Serena diariesCould Serena actually have finally mastered the camera-ready response to press conflict? I wish I was a fly on the wall for the conversation that Sloane says they had. Also, is it weird that one of the things I like about Maria is that she is unapologetically standoffish and openly wants to beat everyone's ass? It seems counterintuitive, since she's never been my favorite, but I guess I like the realness, and what put me off about her early on was not so much her, but that bullshitty PR machine that would not stop.

I watched the third set of Nishikori's win over Federer followed by some of Ferrer-Haas and there's something interesting about the similarity of the match-up: one-handed BH vs short player. Federer's backhand was landing right in Nishikori's hitting zone, allowing Kei to get great depth of shot. Haas' backhand is riding high on Ferrer, leading to awkward positions. Of course, Ferrer is Ferrer and will fight off the shot (though I add he is losing right now) but he's not in position to be aggressive whereas Nishikori was.
Though even a rusty Federer shouldn't have issue with Nishikori on clay. I have to think this is the biggest win ever for an Asian male on this surface. Now either Kei or Pablo Andujar will be a semifinalist at a 1000 clay event.

For the US Open they're steaming all 17 courts and that will pretty sweet. The French Open will be next, I assume.
Anyone watch the Gulbis/Nadal match? It was in Ernests' hands for a set and a half. His arrogance is amusing.
Serena was in fine form against Cibi and I'm looking forward to the French and seeing what she'll do there. I'd love for her to win it. In fact I want her to win all 3 and get to 18. That would be incredible.
And Fed cut his hair. He looks older, like in his mid-30's going into 40, older. I don't care for it.

Troicki had a bit of a meltdown after the chair umpire didn't overturn an out call. He goes as far as to bring the camera over to the spot to prove he's right (I think it was spot next to the one he's pointing to because it is much clearer).

It's hilarious how Gulbis-Nadal lives up to the hype each time, even though Ernests hasn't actually beaten Rafa before. That first set was insane, at the level of Lukas Rosol-in-the-fifth. Wish even a little of that arrogance would brush off onto Ferrer.
This has been one weird week. I've seen how a player can choke his way from an outright win to a split set-retirement victory (that was Granollers-Murray), Benoit Paire being more mentally sound than Novak Djokovic, and Gulbis criticizing his opponent Troicki's meltdown technique.

Sam is such a head case. She could be a very good player if she'd only fix her mental walkabouts. Ugh. Disappointing.
