Apparently, Maria dished it right back in the pre-tourney interview. Telling Serena to stick to sports in her conversations and tend to the circumstances in her own life of having broken up a marriage.
Reminder of tennis rivalries gone by.

The worst (best?) for that was Martina Hingis. It seemed she had something to say about every top player at some point. The catty spat between her and doubles partner Anna Kournikova was gold.

So true. I heard Serena explain that she sought out Maria at the player's party to apologize. I'm glad she owned up but I don't think keeping it all in front of the media is going to turn out well for either of them. Oh well, it's not like they were ever going to be best buds. Meanwhile, Serena has to stop threading or whatever she's doing to her eyebrows. It isn't a good look.
Someone remind me--I know there have been male players that have dated a few of the women on the tour, but I can't remember who they are. Can someone spark my memory? I'm thinking of the old days, not the Stepaneks of the recent memory.

Oh, Hingis.
Too funny, that Kournikova history. HA!
I wonder sometimes about what would have happened had the media been as gossipy back then as the players. I do feel they've switched roles - the media seemed so polite back then, and the players less so. Now we add to the players' responsibilities the unfortunate (and exhausting) job of schooling the commentators in courtesy.
Am I being too rosy about the media of yore?

The whole Serena-Maria media tiff is so silly. Serena may have been foolish to gossip on the phone with her sister in front of a reporter and not consider that it could end up in the article, but she did NOT name a player (the reporter assumed Sharapova), so why did Pova feel the need to get so personal and nasty? (and bring a man and his kids into the discussion?) I think that all the beatings over the last 9 years have really gotten into her head and she was looking for a reason to pile on Serena publicly. She looks especially bitter because Serena apologized to her (before Pova's premeditated comments to the press) that her name was brought into the matter by the reporter's ASSUMPTION. Pova is usually more media-savvy than this. I think she can look forward to a 1 and 1 beating next time.
(I also doubt Serena was talking about Maria, as the comments just don't seem to describe her. My money's on Woz.)

If that's the case, it really does seem out of character for the media savvy Maria. In fact, it also seems somewhat unusual for the usually media un-savvy Serena. And here I am still talking about this after declaring that I soon would be sick of hearing the media talk about this. I'm so full of it.

Heh - but we/you're not media fala! I always like to hear what people here have to say, cause you know, not a bunch of blithering idiots. I too, did not know that the apology came 1st, and it makes Povas comments seem awfully odd, no? Plus like you say, media savvy, just don't touch it.
Can't be Woz curly, she specified a top 5 player. I think, not that I read the actual article.

I suppose it could be Azarenka. I guess it could also be Na Li (who has been hovering between No. 5 and 6) but I find it hard to believe that Jiang Shan is "the guy with the black heart."
Let's face it, Maria's everybody's first guess.

The "Top 5 player" wasn't a quote from Serena's conversation though -- that could be another inference by the reporter (and it'd be easy to still think Woz is top 5.) Besides Woz you've got Vika and Kvitova (who is now dating Stepanek (!) who is divorcing Vaidisova!) so there are definitely other possibilities. Plus the whole part about the player beginning every press conference with "I'm so lucky, I'm so happy" is SO not Pova, which is why I don't think Serena was referring to her. Pova was the reporter's guess because, let's face it, outside of the tennis world she is probably the only other female tennis player this reporter could name. And I wonder if Pova knew it was probably not her as well but took the opportunity to say something nasty anyway (on the heels of her French Open comments re: Serena's build and serving better than David Ferrer :

I wonder what went through Dmitrov's head? He was just minding his own business, and regardless of whether this was actually about Maria or not, everyone thinks he's the guy. It certainly made me think twice about what the hell he's up to. Talk about getting hit with shrapnel!

Why is anyone dating Stepanek??? [/gag]
Serena is, IMO, the best female tennis player ever. By a wide margin. But I do wish she would never talk about anything other than tennis. To be fair, I think the same thing about 99.9% of the rest of tennis players as well. I also think that Sharapova has never gotten over the horror of the 2007 Australian Open final. Serena, Maria: shut the fuck up.
ETA best to f'clese!

Maybe Stepanek is like one of those magic eye puzzles? Like if you get up really close, relax your eyes and kind of look through him, he suddenly turns into George Clooney or something? Either that or he's a vampire.
It's a mystery. I think the moral of this story is that if you are a woman and you go to the Czech Republic, don't drink the water.
