Has anyone been following the tour so far? It has been weird, because with the Indian league recruiting so many top players, it hasn't felt like there was an off-season at all. Still it's great to be watching the first day of the Australian Open.
Hope everyone had a good new year.

Other than Davydenko, who we all knew about, I didn't see any names named. However, they said that a Grand Slam singles winner was involved. I can't imagine that it was Federer, Djokovic, Nadal or Murray, so the only ones left would be Del Potro, Safin, Wawrinka, or Cilic. My money's on someone who would never imagine winning a Grand Slam, so my guess is Cilic.

That's so depressing. But I agree that if they have concrete evidence they shouldn't be burying it.

Ugh, I was sad to read about the scandal. Have to admit that the BF and I immediately thought Safin.
I haven't been following much tennis in the last few years, but you awesome peeps always draw me back. I'll be here if you will!

Hi Tiki, Fala, Guru and Chocula! Nice to be back. The AO is always the worst Slam time wise to follow from the US, especially with all the night matches they play these days, but at least Tennis Channel reruns them the next day.
Somewhere I read that they suspected a US Open singles champion...so sad, the whole thing.

Still hoping some of you guys will drop in...
I haven't caught much so far. Feds' win last night was pretty excellent. Nadal just looked sad. Serena is Serena (GOAT!). Not much else; it's a super busy time at work.

I saw some of Roger's second round match Tiki, and he does look brilliant. I don't know how he is continuing to do it at 34. The volleys are particularly lovely to watch. Haven't seen too much else yet, Tivo is on the blink so I'm looking at Watch ESPN for the moment. But it's bound to get interesting.

Agreed re: Feds, roseha! Truly amazing. Unfortunately work is wicked busy right now and I have to force myself to go sleep instead of watching tennis all night, because I have no choice but to function tomorrow. Damn it. But good to "see" you here, and I'll keep checking in. Best to you, and anyone else who shows up!

Who is Naomi Osaka, and why is she suddenly beating seeded players in straight sets?

Who is Naomi Osaka, and why is she suddenly beating seeded players in straight sets? I don't know but her press conferences sound like a hoot: Osaka acknowledged her uncommon comedic sensibilities, saying that her humor came closest to material found on “the dark side of YouTube.” “I feel like I’m a child of the Internet, and the Internet has raised me, and its jokes might not be appropriate at certain times,” Osaka said.

Uggh. Times have changed. I can no longer access this website on my work server because it's a forum. I guess the hospital got hip to how much time employees were wasting on these sites.
Safin was initially my second guess, especially being Russian, but something about the timing is off. He won his grand slams long before the scandal 1st surfaced. It seems like the revelation about a Grand Slam winner potentially fixing matches would have come out earlier. Plus, it seems too "on the money" for me. The big defiant Russian guy with attitude in cahoots with Russian organized crime seems way too obvious. It seems far more stealth to go after shy, more naive guys who are more desperate, and Cilic fits that stereotype much more easily than Safin.
Also, Brad Gilbert is a savant about tennis, and he specifically said that the Grand Slam that was won was a US Open. If Safin was the suspect, Brad would have said Australian and US Open.

Del Potro fits that bill too, no? I'm really bothered by the fact that so much of this expose is innuendo and rehashed info we already know. It's also interesting that it seems like very little has been said about the women's tour. Naomi sounds amusing, and self-aware for someone so young. Evidently her father is Haitian and her mother is Japanese. I'm wondering it "Osaka" is some sort of "stage" name. I don't know why my mdnd keeps going there except that apparently she was born in Osaka.

Oh, why did I skip over Del Potro? It could be him, and he would have won his Grand Slam around the time of the Davydenko scandal. I guess he didn't really cross my mind because he's been so injured. Also, something about him winning a bronze medal for his country and saying that was his best win ever made me think he was much more about principle and integrity than money, but who knows. Maybe it was an act. I just find the whole thing so disturbing.

I'm sad that Tsonga lost. Am rooting for Raonic over Wawrinka, who I've decided is quite the dick (except when he's beating Djokovic and I become a total hypocrite).
Keep on keepin' on, Roger! And Serena, and Vika (did anyone else see that heartbreaking story about her going hungry as a child?).
Funny story, watching Serena's match a couple days ago, I said to TikiBoy, "Her hair is so gorgeous!" He stared at me for a minute and replied, "You like it because the curl looks just like yours." I hadn't thought of it that way but...busted!
