Mpol, re: Safin:
Very well said; I agree (and I'm a huge Feds fan in case no one ever noticed, ha ha). I really enjoyed Safin's long-ago USO win over Sampras, even though I never minded Sampras. Too bad Marat never lived up to his potential, but at least he was mostly fun to watch -- in all senses of the word.

Now...I never thought Marat had to pay for sex. Just that he slept around. That doesn't bother me in the least. I think he's nicer to his sister than he likes people to know. In looking for the beach picture, I came across this and this and this.I can't find the URL to the picture, but I'm pretty sure I have it on my laptop which I left at work. I'll try to upload it tomorrow

Now...I never thought Marat had to pay for sex. Just that he slept around. That doesn't bother me in the least. I know a couple of folks who know some of the inner workings of the ATP tour and they have said while Safin doesn't have to pay sex- he is very fond of the call girls (and ran up quite a tally once in Cincy). He has also of course had the groupie action as well - quite a bit of it.* But it is a pretty well known secret that he enjoys hookers. Of course- since this is heresay- I can understand if folks don't believe it and maybe the rumors are false. But I am not trying to spread fake information (I am not saying that you are accusing me of such...just clarifying where I heard it) and do trust my sources. Still- unless we see the video footage I guess there is no proof. I don't mind if someone likes to have a whole bunch of sex or anything- just the call girls thing squicks me out- and I understand it won't for everyone. I like Safin- but am not as totally gaga for him as I used to be- and that happened before the call girl info. But I think there are plenty of folks to take up the slack. * Another player who likes the groupie action is Gaston Gaudio who is said to be awesome in the sack. Like- angels parting the clouds and a holy chorus raining down on you. ETA- those pictures of the two of them are adorable. I like Dinara's new brown hair btw...

Ah, Marat.... Those were the heydays for me - when my heart set up camp in the tennis world and its histories/stories... Granted, it was an escape for me from other things, but still.... And that TMC Houston 04 tie-break is the most absorbed in a tennis match I've ever been....
Happy New Year, tennis friends!

Happy New Year oops!
That was a fantastic match in Houston- shortly followed by the amazing 2005 AO semi.
Gulbis up a set and a break against Nole in Brisbane - is an upset at hand?

Should we have an 09 thread out now?
A shame to see Djoko out. I don't hate the guy as much as most here, heh, but it does leave the male side wide open.

Happy New Year indeed, tennis folks! I really like Gulbis, so I'm glad he was able to keep it together to pull out the upset. As for Marat, I know he was the one who suggested Dinara move on from having their mom as primary coach so for that alone she owes him. And she does look fantastic, for her sake I hope her coach noticed Kim Clijsters dad died of lung cancer at 52, I had hoped she'd come back but that's a lot to deal with...

Poor Kim. Apocalipstick, in that first picture you posted of Marat and Dinara in the snow Marat looks EXACTLY like a friend of mine. Such a Russian thing. As for Beaker losing, when I first read Tennis' New Year's Resolutions I wasn't paying attention and I thought Beaker had some real insight into his own personality. Needless to say, I was wrong.

Chesty, didn't mean to imply you were fibbing or anything. And I know Europeans have a different view of hookers than we Americans. (I'm in the legalize prostitution group. I've seen too many women selling themselves for for 5/5 to think a union and benefits wouldn't help.) I can understand the squick though Lots of Euro footballers get hookers and have hooker parties. Different values indeed. I cannot find that beach photo. Crap. I'll keep looking. Rafa lost THREE points on serve to Fabrice today. THREE. In a match. Holy guacamole.

A friendly hello to you (tm Cliff Drysdale) and Happy New Year!
Like you guys, I am so ready for the season. But, good grief, what AWESOME tidbits you guys have doled out already. I'm all for more discussion, and information, about the sex lives of the players. :-)
So, first and foremost:
Whoa. I wonder if it's a one-handed backhand thing? Well, Sampras had a one-hander, so there goes that theory. Not that I have personal experience to draw on, but in some cases it's painfully obvious. So, Chesty, did someone you know well experience the heavenly gates (lucky bitch - grrr.)? Anything additional that you can reveal? Are we going to have to get you drunk again to spill more info? Tiki? Oh, Tiki?
Okay, back to tennis, well sort of. I was just looking at the ATP site, in particular that photo of the four top guys at the starting line. I notice that both Murray and Rafa, in particular Rafa, have their front knees splayed out to the side somewhat, while Roger and Djokitch have their knees straight. I wonder if that presages possible leg/knee issues for Murray and Rafa? Anyone have any knowledge on the matter? I remember we've heard about Rafa's structural issues with his feet.

Hi, harry!
I'll hand out a martini to anyone who needs it! Unfortunately I have no sexy info myself. If no one else does either, maybe we could get apocalipstick to modify her "how would the top players handle a bar fight" summary into something naughtier.
