global sports forum I hope I got that link right - it's for the 4th part of the W discussion harry24 has been linking to. This part is about the shrieking and the roof. At least one of the columnists feels that the emphasis on the shrieking/grunting is sexist, that it always seems to focus on the women and not the men. What do you all think? I think they definitely have a point as far as media coverage goes, but for myself I have to say it generally annoys me with the guys too. But it's true the women are generally higher pitched which I do find harder to listen to. Like, the grunters, male or female, don't bother me as much as the shriekers, if that makes sense. And I'm as guilty as anyone in that I bitch about it far more for players I don't like anyway! And of course the roof - I have mixed feelings about the roofs in general. Clearly there's no going back and I'm sure the French and US will be moving that way too in the coming years. Not much choice given the realities of tv. I absolutely do prefer when the roofs are open. It's "purer", more authentic and traditional and all that stuff. It's just better to me, Slams are "supposed" to be played outside, and it changes the whole dynamic. But I'm like everyone else with the complaining about rain delays and wanting my tennis when I want it, now, not later or tomorrow or whenever. Kind of a pointless discussion since it's a done deal, but still interesting to me. Heh, so in theory I'm anti-roof, but in reality not at all. Rain, shmain, I want my tennis! ETA: Welcome to New England tikigirl .. or wait, do you live here too? Sounded like maybe you're visiting? I'm not so good at remembering where folks are from.

I think Serena sees herself with Venus' body type only "curvier" and she isn't. Nothing wrong with Serena's body type, but she needs to just accept that she's not willowy. And I agree with the Fug Girls, that despite having a tuxedo bib on her dress, Venus looks pretty fab. Which is quite an accomplishment considering she's a professional athlete wearing satin. Muscle and satin are not usually friends.
As for Nadal, despite not being a fan at all, I do feel badly for him. That he didn't even have a fighting chance to defend has to sting. Even if he's only 23, he'd worked a long time to get to where he is, and to have the bad timing of having this injury right at the time where he needed to perform his best has to hurt. He may bug me, but he's a decent enough guy, and seems rather emotional. I hope it really is just a temporary injury that hit at the wrong time but doesn't have longer term implications.

*sigh* They're hyping up Murray on the national news tonight. I wish the British media were forcibly muzzled for the two weeks of Wimbledon..
Is it only me, or is it amazing that it's been a whole year since Rafa won at the 2008 Wimbie final?! It seems like only a couple of weeks ago we were all going crazy in that last set here on the boards.. AHHH Nadal's going to take in... No, Federer's going to pull through... AHHHHHH it's too dark, we're not going to finish.... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Nadal won.
Ahem, or maybe it's just me.

I was looking at those gold-ey pictures late in the week and I was thinking the same thing. I know the outfit is weird--but it works since it makes Serena look good in spite of it. For Serena, that's quite the accomplishment.
The thing about Goran Ivanisevic is. . . I was a huge fan when he was playing and I remember when he wanted to quit so he could help fight in the war with Serbia. He was told (by the Croatian government?) that he would serve Croatia better by continuing to play and to keep talking about the war. So right. Knowing as little as I did about the Serb/Croat war I chose Croatia for the very stupid reason that I liked Goran and I've never changed my mind (after I learned about what was going on--it's not like I never did a little research).
I've been watching ESPNClassic's re-airing of some classic Wimbledon matches on and off all day. It's getting me completely excited for tomorrow and the order of play is packed tomorrow. I had some work that I needed to get done this weekend but Roger at 8am ET has convinced me to just get to work by 8am tomorrow and get it done then while watching the stream. Thanks Rog! Meanwhile, the most boring match of the day (for me)? Sampras/Rafter. After the beauty that was the 1980 Borg/McEnroe this one is *yawn*. (But, boy Rafter was sure a cutie--even if it does look like he was wearing his pjs.)
Definitely not just you. As I get older, the years go by so fast (now, where's my walker?)!

I don't think anything will be better than his victory at Wimbledon for me, especially because of his history at the event, his wildcard status and the epic "People's Monday". I doubt we'll ever see the like of it again. OOP is out for tomorrow and i can with 100% certainty tell you where the BBC coverage will start:

So, watching last year's final again. I'm beating a dead horse here but after watching those other finals--and they were great finals--I'm more convinced than ever that Tursunov is the biggest horse's ass around. The other matches gained momentum and gravitas as they went along--this one had it from the first point and didn't let up.
But, one thing I had completely forgotten about (even just watching some of this match after the French final)--that mothra bite of Federer's. I didn't think that thing was ever going to go away.

Thanks, acre. I'm originally from Maine, but I live in New Mexico now -- I'm here in New England for my annual summer visit.
Argh, the infamous Mothra bite. Poor Roger
ETA, I'm no Goran fan. Wasn't he a rabid homophobe?

I have no idea. He played pre-internet and all my tennis news came from Tennis, Deuce and Tennis Week. Needless to say, they weren't talking about it.

Goran's charm. That's what I remembered. It was only one comment (that I know of), but it's still ugly. I remember the nasty remarks slung Mauresmo's way too. Ah well. It's not like I'm looking for enlightenment from professional athletes anyway. I'm shallow as hell. I just want Verdasco to take off his shirt. Permanently.

Mpol I believe they're talking about the medium sized red mark on Roger's left cheek from 08 OZ to 08 US Open, he had it what seemed like all year last year. Since his skin is always flawless it was rather noticeable.

I just remembered that now that you mention it! It looked like a huge mosquito bite that refused to go away. Maybe his curative powers, if that's the expression, were lowered last year.

I'm still so happy that he won the French.
Can't say I remember that mark but during the French my mum also pointed out that his skin looked flawless. I'm like... yeah it is!

So far, Laura Robson has taken the first set off Daniela H. She's doing very well. A few nerves at times from both players as expected, but she's more than holding her own. Blake is currently letting my bracket down, by going a set down to Seppi.

I got a Feli feed! And then it switched to Roger just when I was so very excited. Oh well.
