Brilliant guys. Can't wait to spend yet another season with y'all.
I must say though that the season is indeed far too long. I LOVE tennis, it is by far and away my favorite sport but I want to miss it more. Davis Cup was done only a few weeks ago... I really thikn their should be a loner off season. A few months so I can really miss this wonderful game.

As much as I hate to say it, I think I might agree with you. The men's season just ended, and although when I'm in the midst of the "offseason" I'm counting the time until the new season starts up again, some downtime would probably be a good idea. Maybe if the men's tour at least ended their season at the same time the women's tour did this year that would help. The women have been off for about 2 months.
That said, I love the Australian/Asian summer season, because for the first couple of weeks, there's basically tennis being played somewhere 24 hours a day.
I saw part of Justine's match last night because I was having trouble sleeping, and she looked pretty sharp. Petrova didn't look impressive at all, so it's still a little early yet to assess exactly how well Justine will do, but I have a feeling she'll be in the mix by the spring hardcourt season. I also saw Ivanovic/Dokic, which was bound to be a heartbreaker since one of those two had to lose. I didn't see the second set when Jelena shut Ana down completely, but Ana seemed to hold it together well at the end. I hope she pulls out of that funk she's been in. I hope the WTA delivers on all the potential it's showing this year.

The season is definitely too long -- for me as well as the players! My favorite sport is baseball (tennis is a close second, of course), and I miss it terribly between the end of the playoffs in October/November and the start of spring training games in March -- but I also appreciate the breather and am so invigorated when the new season starts. No doubt the players are too. I don't expect tennis to ever give the players three or four months off, but two solid months would be nice for them.
ETA thanks to f'clese for the Henin et al updates. I haven't watched any matches in ages, and probably won't start up again until the AO, so it's nice to get some info and updates.

Is anyone rooting for Henin this time around? I'm in two frames of thought. One, I love that she's back, the women's tour needs more depth... But two... I don't want to see her win, well not really. When Kim C came back, she down played her chances and let her tennis do the talking. She won the US Open. Henin has already laid stake on the Aus Open and Wimbledon... Just let the tennis do the talking will ya'? There has always been something about Justine that has rubbed me the wrong way.
Seeing Dokic loose is heartbraking. Why the slump again!? It is never ending with the poor girl. I hope she can do well this summer and then havea much better rest of the year.

I love Henin's game so I'd like to see her do well, but I understand the ambivalence. She's always been a really difficult character.
ESPN Classic is showing 2003 AO Roddick versus El Aynaoui. I had forgotten about Roddick's heinous visor/erection-hair combo. Thanks, ESPN. Ugh. Also, I kind of miss EA's graceful scarecrow game.

I just watched Baggy take down Mardy "No Socks" Fish in Brisbane. Baggy was really playing well and it's good to have him back. Hopefully he'll stay injury free for a while. Mardy looked....different. He's lost weight or something and he suddenly has cheekbones and almost looks attractive. I'm just going to go sit in the corner and shudder now.
ETA - Querry and Blake are playing now. It looks like Querry shortened a pair of pajama pants and wore them to the tennis court.

Hee, Breezy it's so true, re: Querry's pants.
Can't wait for Molik/Clysters. Today has been a tennis watching day... almost neglected my drawing! HAHA .
EDIT: Well that was a lacklusture match. Kim played very well, whereas Alecia is still finding her form... and her serve... no where near as fast as it use to be.

I was watching the US vs. Australia match in Hopman Cup. It feels weird to say this but Lleyton is looking very impressive. Yes, Isner's serve seems a bit off but Hewitt was being aggressive from the first shot.
About all I can say about the US team is that the mixed doubles delivered on the comedy - there was one overhead where I'm not entirely sure John even saw Melanie was in position to hit it. Luckily, Melanie ducked just in time.

I think it takes my head a little while to get into the new year, so thanks everyone for the reports. Henin is talking up the AO and Wimbledon? Just what I need to root even more against her

Happy new year, folks! I too tend to wait until the AO but I also take the autumn off for the most part. I usually try to drum up enthusiasm for the year-end c'ships. For me tennis seems really AO to USO, but I have to make sure that there's at least some of the year when I get things done....
Looking forward to the 2010 season with you all!

Considering the choice seemed odd, Laura Robson has been very impressive at Hopman Cup. You wouldn't have know that she was the young one instead of Lisicki. She also took control of the doubles match - even outhitting Kohlschreiber. In the post-match interview, she proved to be a charmer - not pleased she couldn't close out Lisicki in the first set while saying (correctly) she carried Murray through the doubles win (this after he'd said he was tired from carrying her on his shoulders in their first doubles match). There's also talk about them teaming up come 2012 Olympics (well, Andy's talking while Laura supposedly told him no).

Yeah, in context of the press conference it was definitely a joke--they were talking about her hitting him so much with her racquet that he was getting sore. My favorite line from Robson was her calling what the media puts out "malarkey."
