Yanina Wickmeyer is currently ranked #16 for women's tennis. So can anyone tell me, why the hell she is playing right now in the qualifying draw? That does not make any sense. Heck she almost lost in the first round of qualifying! It's because of the ban that was reversed. Entry to slams is based on rankings 6 weeks prior, and at that time Wickmayer was banned (I can't remember the details of the banning, something like missing a few random drug tests in a row) and the ban was just recently lifted. So now she has to qualify in order to play the Aussie. It would be a damn shame if she suffered a freak loss in qualies and couldn't play, considering she has been on fire lately (USO semi, won an Aussie warm-up last week).

Wow, Federer talking about Tiger in L'Equipe is everywhere, huh? I guess when you're the only famous friend Tiger is willing to talk to, everyone listens.

I wonder if Charles Barkley has talked to him by now. I know when the shit initially hit the fan Chuck said that he & MJ hadn't but wanted to talk to Tiger. And my non tennis fan husband has made a series of tasteless jokes about Roger & his friendship with Tiger. Mostly to the tune of what happens in Dubai stays in Dubai b/c they don't have chatty Perkins Restaurant waitresses

I was excited for both of the male finalists in Sydney this week. It was a nice performance for both of them. It adds a little intrigue to the Open.

I still love Gasquet. When he is on, his tennis is so much fun to watch.

Hmmmm, will he bring that form into his match with Youzhny? I'll sleep on it before I change my draw. . .
Did everyone see Federer's idea for the exhibition in Laver for Haiti? $10 a seat, top players playing mixed doubles. What a great idea.
eta: falafaclese, your avatar picture is the Caption Contest picture on the Australian Open website. Good choice--for you and them.

Roger's writing about the exhibition for Haiti in his Facebook, people are buying tickets already. Great idea, Roger.
It will be interesting to see who joins up in doubles. Maybe there will be some footage of it during the early rounds.
I have very little room on my DVR, I'm afraid I'll have to save the earlier rounds in SD. What with the time difference I won't see much live.

If anyone out there has ESPN360.com you can watch the exhibition at 10 pm tonight.
eta: ooooh, they're streaming it on the Australian Open site. (I'll watch that on the laptop and football on the TV. . . that'll work)

Beaker and Rafa chest bumping. I can honestly say I never thought I'd see that.
Roger is so the class president of the tennis players.
The Rafa/Roger noises when they rally are priceless.

You can thank Verdasco. I was flipping over to ESPN Classic to watch the 2009 semi (you all know the one) and I noticed the crawl said ESPN360 was going to air it, which made me check the AO site. Thanks Fernando!
My thoughts on the exhibition: -Roger is effortlessly funny. Beaker has to work at it, but Roger is a natural. Strangely, Beaker trying so hard didn't bother me. I think it was him wanting to be friendly with Rafa that got to me--it was sweet. -Rafa is like the younger brother who wants to hang around with the cool kids. He wants to be there, he wants to be part of the crowd but it is harder for him. His effort to fit in makes me adore him even more. He seems the most at ease with Roger--and Roger really is BMOC. -Kim seems the closest to a friend I would have. Her wanting to rub Rafa's leg (and then doing it) was hysterical. -Serena was so good natured about the numerous jokes at her expense from the US Open. Good for her. And, my goodness, she looks spectacular. -Jim was a good chair ump. Nice to see the Aussie crowd still likes him so much. I was watching his quarterfinal vs. Pete (when Tim G. was dying but no one except Pete's camp knew it yet) and I have to say--Jim has gotten better looking with age.
So glad I got to see it because the Ravens depressed me with their bad play. Two bad NFL games when I was so looking forward to them. . . . thank goodness for tennis.
