It looks like they are seriously considering replacing Davis Cup with a Ryder Cup style tournament. I think it's a great idea, because obviously the top players keep skipping Davis Cup. I'm a little troubled by some of the details emerging, though. Mid-match substitutions? How would that work?

Tag-team tennis? Yuck. Agreed that Davis Cup needs to be looked at but turning it into a World Team Tennis-type atmosphere doesn't work for me. They should change the tournament--not the way tennis played. Hee to the way some of the article was written "players have to watch the clock between points" makes it sound like they have to watch a clock in between points.

If it only means that players can't wait 29 seconds between serves I'm all for it. But substituting players in mid-match is insane.

Crazy entertaining match between Serena and Aravane Rezai. Rezai POUNDED Serena for the first set and a half, and then at a set and 5-2 down (Dinara much?) Serena's movement improved, and she reeled off 5 straight games to win the set, and then traded a couple breaks with Rezai in the third before serving it out at 5-4 40-15 in the third set. Rezai looked downright frightening for most of the match, and actually made Serena win it all the way. Both of us over here were convinced that Serena was a goner. If Rezai continues to play like this, she could cause some damage, but she has a history of being inconsistent. On the plus side, she moved better than she has in the past.

Yeah I flipped over to it when Serena was down 1-6, 2-5 and thought WTF? I thought she was done for.
Verdasco beat Djoker 6-1, 6-2 in Kooyong today. Djoker looked like hell which, of course, makes me happy. I assume though that he will pick up his form for the Australian Open. I don't like Verdasco's new kit. So matchy-matchy. He looks like one of those guys at the tennis club that I can't stand. Couldn't he just play without any shirt at all? I mean, are there rules about that?

Don't insult our intelligence breezy. I'm so sure you give a shit that he's "matchy-matchy."

Ok, so I just want him to play without his shirt. The problem of course is that if they let Verdasco play without a shirt then they have to let other players do it and pretty soon Stepanek would be running around shirtless.

Yanina Wickmeyer is currently ranked #16 for women's tennis.
So can anyone tell me, why the hell she is playing right now in the qualifying draw? That does not make any sense. Heck she almost lost in the first round of qualifying!

RE: Verdasco's outfit--the shoes are too much but I'm okay with the rest of it. Okay, maybe the top of the shorts don't need that green band. I'm so crossing my fingers that the 2009 season for Fer wasn't a fluke. I want him to come out blazing in 2010--and maintain it through the year.

The problem of course is that if they let Verdasco play without a shirt then they have to let other players do it and pretty soon Stepanek would be running around shirtless. Maybe, with a little luck, Verdasco will have a meltdown or something during a match, and they can punish him by making him play shirtless? That way you get what you want without having to be subjected to, ahem, the other thing.

Just ordered my Sony Ericsson tickets. Plenty of shirtless guys down there (gotta love the heat).
This will be my first Grand Slam tournament with The Tennis Channel. I think my head might explode with the possibilities. AND! I got a new TiVo that I haven't been able to fill up yet. . . What a way to jumpstart my tennis watching.
