In Monfils' and the referee's defense, don't the players get asked whether they want to play on in a case like this? It's possible Fognini didn't step and say conclusively that he didn't want to play from the beginning. Not sure, just asking. I watched it with the sound down earlier, so I'll have to check out the replay.
Also, has anyone noticed that they've been using shot spot after close calls during the broadcast of the men's matches but not the women's matches? What's that about? Is there some extra charge the WTA didn't want to pay, I wonder?

Those pictures really don't do Fognini justice because when they showed him about to come out to start the match he was just...gorgeous.
Monfils is always annoying in the way he'll try and get the crowd on his side when he starts to play lazy and ridiculous tennis. I like him but I wish he'd learn to control himself some more. I mean how old is he?
I see that Gael is playing dubs but not with Mina which would have been kind of awesome as they call Mina the mini Monfils.
Venus looked good today and so did Roger after the first set. Glad that Sveta pulled it out because she looked just about done in. I kinda wish Rezai had lost just for Venus' sake.
And did anyone hear more about Woz's injury? She seems perfectly fine now so I don't know if it was as bad as it seemed.
Tsonga played really well today and it was nice to see.

Monfils irritates me the same way, skyz. I like Tsonga more. And, now, Mina.

Hey, tiki -- A few pages back you asked:
I refer you to my post just after the draw came out: So, no, tiki. It's not that it's particularly hot in here. It's that Chiudinelli is, indeed, goddamn pretty.
And agree that Fognini is gorgeous. He doesn't look Italian, though, does he? Except for the gorgeous part. (Have you guys ever been to Rome? Yowza.)

He really is but have his eyebrows always looked like that? I asked this before and I need to know because I don't remember the Joan Crawford eyebrows. They are distracting me from the pretty.

Finally got a chance to check my ESPN's coverage of what happened between Monfils and Fognini and it's not as cut and dry as I originally thought. I thought only Monfils wanted to play on and Fognini wanted to stop, but it kind of looks like Both players originally wanted to play on
It looks like Fognini only changed his mind after his camp told him to stop. Some accounts on line say that his camp was actually trying to stall to allow more darkness to fall on the match.
I'm so confused about the whole thing. At first, I was pissed at Monfils and the Tournament director for playing on when a player didn't want to, but if Fognini's camp was "Coaching" him to stop and then trying to stall, then I would be pissed at them.
Does anyone have any insight on this?

That's what I was saying when it was happening--both Fabio and Gael were pleading to play and then they cut to the (gorgeous) coach and he started yelling "Fabio, Fabio" to get his attention. Then he made two motions with his hands--one a cut across his throat (obviously to indicate to stop play) and the second was pushing his hands down. That's why I said that his team was doing him a disservice by yelling and screaming at him to stop the match. At that point he had no control over the play and they were just getting him worked up.

This rain sucks. It's going to totally screw the entire schedule.

There's a writeup about Fognini/Monfils on Tennis.com here. Interestingly, Tignor wrote this: Interesting. Also, I finally watched the replay this morning before I left for work (I can't understand why they never showed it last night), and the commentators couldn't figure out what was being said at the net, but they thought Fognini wanted to stop. Who knows? There was lot of stalling though. At one point, Gimelstob said that they were using the light from the press box to help illuminate the court. Crazy.

I'm really dissapointed I didn't get to see any of the Monfils/Fognini match. It wasn't on any of the coverage I recorded yesterday. This morning they were showing matches from yesterday due to the rain but they still didn't show it. I saw Murray's match and Berdych's match instead. I was really looking forward to it. Stupid TSN.

TTC didn't show the Monfils match until about four am or 3 am which was ridiculous because they showed Venus and Roger on a continuous loop! I did watch it and it was really bizarre.
Live tennis! Finally.

Right? I wanted to watch their French Open today but they kept showing the same matches that had already aired. However, that did give me the opportunity to see Wrigley Field go dark in the middle of a pitch so it's all good. I guess yesterday was a day for darkness affecting sports.
They're rolling out the courts slowly--only four courts have matches on right now.
Is Roddick's opponent 10? Talk about a baby face.

Because I can always be counted on for the shallow -- Roddick is really not aging well at all. I never found him attractive, but he's really devolved into a kind of skinny ferret-face. No offense to ferrets.
Thanks, skyz. I remember cheering for Liukin during the Olympics. She was awesome.
