I, too, find the number of retirements suprising. Is the USO series taking too much out of the players?

Wait, Venus is out too?! They're saying "unspecified illness." Too fucking bad.

For you guys who aren't watching the TV coverage, Venus has been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Sjögren’s Syndrome. Strangely enough, on TTC Mary Carillo read the statement. Sitting with her was Matts Wilander, whose mother has the same disease. He said his mother experiences joint pain and fatigue. How much does this suck?

Here is the Wikipedia page for Sjogren's syndrome, if I got the name right from harry's post. Poor Venus. I wish her the best.

I've been really warming to Serena this summer, but she lost me with her recent presser comments about the whole foot fault incident. Yes, she may be up to here with talking about it, but she was just so obnoxious and adolescent with her smirking and eye-rolling and saying how over it all she was. Ugh. I really wish she would grow up learn to be a little more thoughtful when she's talking to the press. That valley girl circa Clueless routine she does is nowhere near as funny or clever as she seems to think it is. I get that she wishes she could get past it, but she's going to get asked about it from time to time. Maybe she could just say could just say she feels bad about letting her emotions get the better of you, and putting a spotlight on the lineswoman who was just trying to do her job. Say it over and over again if you have to. I don't know if she means to be that brazen. I tend to think not, because I can't imagine someone like that and someone like Venus coming from the same family. I also can't imagine the person who broke down into tears just because she won a match at Wimbledon could really think that way, but she certainly does sound brazen. Here is the Wikipedia page for Sjogren's syndrome, if I got the name right from harry's post. Poor Venus. I wish her the best. Wow, I hadn't heard that. I hope now that she has a diagnosis she'll be able to manage it effectively. That's terrible, and very unexpected given the good start she had in her first match.

Russell's sleeveless shirt/biceps have me nostalgic for Rafa's biceps...

So sad for Venus. I fear this may be the straw that breaks the camels back for her career.
The Weirdo Bros are gone and I'm doing a happy dance.
Roddick is falling apart out there. I don't know what is with that guy.

Poor Venus. I hope her case of Sjogren's syndrome is one she can manage.
Thanks for the Wiki page, tiki.

I definitely picked the weirdest day to go to the Open. You know how you look at the schedule in advance and plan - and this morning the Soderling (curiosity about the wrist + playing an Irishman) and Venus/Lisicki matches were the two I was anticipating. Still a good day, just had to rework the plan.
Then again, I should have figured it'd be one of those days when the first player I saw was Serena... smashing a racket on the practice court. Actually the practice court view was awesome: at the same time were Serena, Caroline, Delpo, Vika, and giggly doubles team Gajdosova/Mattek-Sands-dressed-normally-which-is-weird (also saw her post-match wearing American flag knee-highs and I think there was a message on the black undereye but I'll want for the pics for that).
I came in on the Madison Keys/Lucie Safarova match in the second set. I don't really remember Lucie's game to say what her level is but their serves (first and second) are nearly identical in speed and she was doing quite a bit of choking herself prior to that last game. Madison's groundstrokes can be lethal... especially when they landed in the court. Very impressed with her game.
Amusing bit about Andy M's match - Knowing that Andy is a slow starter, I decided after seeing Madison to instead watch Jamie in his doubles match - or more appropriately, he and partner-of-the-week getting blasted off the court - against Melzer/Petzschner. When that match ended, I looked at Andy's score for the first time and, sure enough, was down a break in the first. I rushed into Ashe but by the time I got to the upper deck, I'd heard that Andy had already gotten the break back and looked basically okay after that. They may not be twins but weird telepathy thing.
Huuuuge crowd for the end of Bogomolov/Johnson match. Bet at least half that crowd never heard of Bogomolov prior to heading there (safe to say hardly anyone knew Johnson) but saw American vs American and Fifth set and they must have jumped.
Court 17 is nice, though I only saw the outside because that's when Karlovic's serve was ensuring there would be no chest bumps. All I could see of the action was Ivo's head.

I like Roger in red.
I'm sick of the talk about Murray winning a major. He has yet to show the ability to win a major while actually playing in one. Something would have to change for me to buy that storyline.

Another one bites the dust -- Ivanovic got a walkover courtesy of Cetkovska.

Roger did look very nice indeed. I'd actually like to see Rafa in a polo for once, like Roger, just to compare.
I feel bad but very relieved that Venus has finally found out what's been wrong with her all these years. I remember when she was going to the Mayo clinic a few years ago and her anemia, etc. I certainly hope she comes back as she is my favorite player and learns to live with this.
Roger put on a nice show today and so did Serena. Very, very efficient.
I wish Gael wasn't so lackadaisical all the fucking time. He should have already been off the court by now, losing the 1st set shouldn't have happened. Not to say that JCF isn't playing well, because he is, but Gael should have already won this. I hope he doesn't throw this away.
