They usually rotate the top players so that all of them get a chance to play on Centre Court. If the Queen weren't attending, I wouldn't think anything of Serena being on Court 2. But since the Queen is appearing and they've made such a big deal of the curtsy/bow, it does seem a little suspect. Serena is #1 and the biggest star (except for maybe Sharapova) in the women's game, so it's odd that she's not playing for the queen. Obviously, they scheduled the best men's matches on CC, so why not the women? Serena is THE biggest star in the women's game, regardless of who Madison Avenue likes -- generally speaking she is more famous, gets more buzz, more fan support and much bigger tv ratings than Pova. I think it would have been appropriate for her to play for the Queen but I kind of saw this coming -- they were asking her about the Queen a lot, and part of me thought they wouldn't give her Centre Court since she opened there on Tues (maybe also because of Wimby's dubious "we like to put attractive (read: thin and blonde) players on Centre" attitude from last year). What I thought was most interesting though was that Woz is being given the chance to play for the Queen over Pova. I guess Woz's star is really rising? (and Pova's diminishing since her results have been lackluster?) Tennis's new "Golden Girl", maybe? Anyways, I doubt it really matters-- I bet the Queen will leave after Murray's match.

Wimby's dubious "we like to put attractive (read: thin and blonde) players on Centre" attitude from last year). Oooh, I forgot about that shit. Thanks for reminding me. I always talk about the short memory of the American public, and here I am.

And here I sit wishing Derrick Rostagno was still playing so that if by some freak of scheduling he got to play before "the Queen" he'd just politely stand there while his opponent bowed and then explain to the press that he's not British, he has no "queen" and that the only people he "bows" to are his parents.
But I'm a rabblerouser like that.

Came home, viewed my nine hours of coverage I had recorded and there isn't one single frame of Mahut/Isner. I've got the whole Roddick match, I've got the Federer match. I've also got most of Venus's match and I saw Wickmayer's match point. They didn't even mention it.
ETA - they are finally showing it on the evening coverage. I'd forgotten how interesting Mahut's face is. He looks like one of Peter Pan's Lost Boys. It's too bad someone couldn't have taken out a dolly and wheeled Isner around when they had to change ends because he looked like he could barely move.

That's weird. What is the coverage channel in Canada? I came here to post that Isner/Mahut is the top story on ESPN.com. (The picture is of John bent over, hands on knees, sucking wind.) I was having a discussion at work about where the match would end up considering the spectacular way the US won their World Cup match today. He did not think it would rate, I was just curious. I'll have to turn on ESPNews to see where it ends up in the hour there.
I forgot too. Damn it. That was huge news last year and I should have remembered.

TSN ETA - Hold it. This is who Roger almost lost to today? What the hell is he wearing a hat and sunglasses on the court for? Damn, I'm going to have to go back and watch that match.

Oh my, my, my. I'll have to keep a look out for this guy -- for research purposes only, of course. Damn he's fine.

Finally got to see some Isner/Mahut tonight on Tennis Channel. It wasn't a great amount of coverage, but at least you had fairly decent commentary.
Guru, I agree about Serena's court assignment. No way should she be on Court two tomorrow instead of Centre. I don't know what is up with Wimbledon but it's not good.

ESPN just showed the queen and some very specific greeters: BJK, Navratilova, Venus, Roddick, Serena, and finally Federer. Serena got to do her curtsy and I think Venus did a slight curtsy, but everyone else just bowed slightly.

I just saw Murray and Nieminen enter and bow to the queen. I wasn't sure what my reaction would be, but I thought the whole thing seemed completely awkward and weird. Everyone there seems to be way into it though. The more I think about it, the more bothered I am that Serena's not going to be there. ETA: ESPN just showed the queen and some very specific greeters: BJK, Navratilova, Venus, Roddick, Serena, and finally Federer. Serena got to do her curtsy and I think Venus did a slight curtsy, but everyone else just bowed slightly. Interesting. I missed that. I'm so curious bout what Serena's feeling about the scheduling. Knowing how she is, I hlaf expect that she'll say something about it at some point whether it's now or sometime in the near future after the tournament's all over.

ESPN interviewed Fed and apparently the greeting line had lunch with the queen. Fed and Mirka were sitting next to the queen with Henman and Venus on the other side. Also, Djokovic and Sharapova were in the greeting line, so I guess they had all of the big names except for Murray and Nadal who are playing today. I don't know if Serena had lunch with the queen since she has to play today, but she was in the greeting line.
Hannah Storm and Mary Carillo interviewed Isner's mom and Hannah was her usual terrible self. "How do you feel being the mom of half of the greatest thing to ever happen to our sport?" Umm...

I'm watching LiveScoreHutner at work 'cause I can't wait to see what shape Isner and Mahut are in when they walk out.

At this point honestly I feel like a total killjoy but just play a damn tiebreak and be done with it. 65-64? That's ridiculous. They are holding up an entire part of the draw. This doesn't make any damn sense.

Isner wins 70-68 in the fifth.
