Can I make this work? eta: Here are the draws that breezy linked to before. I really hope Monday starts off with the top quarter of the men's draw because, damn, it's packed--with all the Spaniards. Why is Isner listed? He's already pulled out, hasn't he? Damn, Llodra vs. Berdych in the first round. That sucks because I was hoping they would each do well this year. I'll look at the women later.

Before the draws came out, I was trying to think of who was the dangerous floater now that Nalbandian squeaked in. Llodra being the highest ranked non-seed may end up avoiding Berdych with a seed's withdrawal.
With that in mind, the one player that that concerned me was Dolgopolov since he keeps losing close matches. Which means that Ferrer is the one who got screwed.
The other high ranked player I see losing early is Davydenko. He's still off and likely playing Gasquet second round.
On the ladies side, the one first round match that made me frown was Hantuchova vs. Safina. Sharapova can't seem to avoid the #1 seed in majors and Venus has to deal with perpetual thorn-in-her-side Pironkova as her first seed.
The draw seems to set up nicely for Azarenka to have a breakout tournament.

Seeing Dolgopolov play live is one of my goals this year so that match better be on Monday because I want Ferrer to go far and Monday is my only First Round day.

Thanks, lt. Work has reached an insane level. I'm putting together a presentation in addition to everything else. So, I'm spending every spare moment in the office reading stuff on the Hague Convention. Yay me! So...with the Open starting next week, I'm going to be super distracted. I'm going to have to limit my watching or treat myself with watching once I've completed a sufficient amount of reading. It'll be like law school all over again. *barf* Those of you going, I want detailed accounts, with photos. Preferably ones that go in the Gutter thread.

According to Kuznetsova's twitter, Momo is arriving in NY tomorrow. I wonder if she's coming there to coach someone or just for fun? Sveta is being coached by Loic Courteau who used to be Momo's coach, and of course Llodra's there, so she may be there for him.

Lil' Wayne sent a letter from prison to Sports Illustrated predicting who will win the USO he goes with Rafa and Kim. I love that he is a tennis fan- I mean he has a sound loop of Elena on one of his tracks. His letter indicates that he knows a lot about the sport too. Here's the Lil' Wayne track. There are a few seconds of talking at the beginning before the music starts:

That may be the cheapest yet most effective publicity for the USO and tennis overall. Lil' Wayne? Who knew? The USTA has to be loving it.
I'm ready to bring this sweltering summer to an end. And nothing signals the end of summer like the USO. Are you ready for some tennis?

Someone much more knowledgeable than I might know why the first seed isn't playing tomorrow night?

Has Nadal ever really played on Monday at the USO since he's started winning slams? I think he might be starting the tournament off like years previously and he declined playing opening night. Like how he didn't meet the Queen at Wimby. Otherwise it is odd but I would have thought they'd put Andy on for an all American opening night or Isner. Not that Roger's chopped liver, lol.
I think Venus has played the first night match the last two years and now this is the third. I thought maybe Kim would get it as defending champ, the darling of Flushing Meadows, mommy dearest, nicest person on Earth, etc.
Hope Dani beats Safina and Venus remains injury free and wins her opening match as well. And Gael to win as well.

Does the number one seed play the first day or is it the defending champion that plays the first day. If it's the later then I guess they just had to make do. Is Kim playing today?

Kim is playing the second match on Ashe today, and Fed and Venus have the two night matches. I guess with JMdP out, Fed is the closest thing they have to a men's champion in the draw. I'm not sure what the usual practice is, but if Venus has played the first night the last two years, I guess there's no hard and fast rule. Since Wozniacki is just coming off the title match in New Haven, she probably asked for a delayed start.
Today will be quite a day. Venus, Fed, Clijsters, Safina, Ivanovic, Monfils, Dementieva, Azarenka and Soderling are all playing today. I'd love to be there. Safina/Hantuchova could be the match of the day. I'm rooting for Dinara.

Macatee just isn't host enough to make up for having both Jimmy Connors and Martina in the booth with him. One or the other TTC! (Seriously, don't let Connors sit in the middle and stare into the camera like he's Count Orlov straight off the bat on the first day. It's creepy and disorienting.)

Tight match between Dani and Dina. I don't want to leave, but I have to. I'm going to miss the best part.

Safina is out in straight sets and Monfils is down 2-1 in the 5th. Looks like Soderling is going to 5 sets too.
