I just read somewhere that Marat Safin told a reporter that Dinara will never play professionally again. I'm not surprised given how bad her injury seemed, but it still makes me very sad. As crazy as her matches could be sometimes, I found her to be tough, strong, and very likeable. Something about her always won me over.

That is sad, indeed. Not at all shocking given he- extensive and se-ious inju-ies, but too damn bad. I hope she can find happiness and fulfillment in something outside of competitive tennis, whethe- that be wo-king with kids in tennis camps, advising, o- even something completely un-elated.
Yeah, she was a head case, but she was also an exceptional tennis playe-, cut down in the p-ime of he- career. Who know is she'd have ove-come he- demons to win a big one, but it's a damn shame sh didn't have mo-e oppo-tunities to t-y. The talent was clea-ly the-e.
Could swea- I saw 2-3 a-ticles on Mu--ay yeste-day, saying he didn't think the-e would be a st-ike, but they we-e on the gene-al pages, not the tennis section, nothing the-e ... and when I went back to look they had all gone "poosh"! Anyone else have a chance to see them?
China open has been decimated, no? Got no issue with Pova she just twisted the ankle, and natch Se-ena plays as light a sched as she can get away with ... but also Djok, Fed, big names. Not slacke-s, just exhausted and dealing with niggling inju-ies, but damn that tou-ny isn't gonna have much of a d-aw.

Too bad, I was wondering when things were going to pick up again. I seriously hope that Sod's mono is not the incapacitating kind that apparently ended Anic's career (am I remembering correctly?)
Poor Dinara. No doubt that she would really have won over the viewing audience with a big Slam victory, it would have been great for her also needless to say. I also hope she will find an occupation she'll be happy with, if this is true.

I don't remember the source but read somewhere that Dinara is only able to practice for about fifteen minutes before her back gives problems. Suspect the retirement announcement will come pretty soon. Such a shame.
Ancic's career ended because of his back. The mono just ruined a couple of the earlier seasons.
I guess we now have to accept that Donald Young is seriously in the US tennis discussion. Following up the US Open run with making his first ATP final by beating Monfils in a third set tiebreak. He'll be playing Murray in the final.

I think if you can get Monfils to a deciding set, and stay with him, his lack of focus will usually at least give you opportunities. For someone of Young's level to stick with him, though, it means he's either playing very well, or Monfils was having another one of his off days. Monfils needs to have a good result, probably a win, before the end of the year if he wants to finish in the top ten. He has a lot of points to defend from Paris last year.

Tipsy would be in the headlines right now since he just won his first ATP title. I kind of liked that he'd been the highest ranked player never to win a title. Now I'm kind of afraid because if you look at the Race standings and add on this week's points, he's very close to the Top 10!
Poor Li Na. Or at this point, poor Li Na's husband/new coach.

Did something happen besides her separating from the coach?

Did something happen besides her separating from the coach? In the last couple of days, she announced that she'd be using her husband as her coach again, and talked about how it is sometimes difficult to balance the relationships:

That and then yesterday she lost in the first round of the China Open to Niculescu by the score of 6-4 6-0 with an entire nation focused on her.

Thanks for the Li update, you guys. Poor Na, indeed.
But a bigger "poor" for Dinara. And for us Dinara fans. It truly makes me sad.

It's weeks like this that make Andy Murray fans truly believe he'll win a Slam. To beat Rafa is one thing - kind of figured he would do so either here or in Shanghai. To absolutely blow him off the court in the third set - Rafa won four points - looked a lot like most of Rafa's losses to Djokovic.
Then for good measure, Andy and Jamie won the doubles title.
Number of Titles won by Murray this year: 4. Number of Titles won by Nadal and Federer: 4 (3 for Rafa, 1 for Roger). True in Rafa's case, it's mostly thanks to constantly facing Djokovic in finals but still weird stat.

I'm not enjoying the Shanghai Masters very much. The venues seem incredibly noisy and the spectators don't seem to have a clue as to proper etiquette during a match. Seeing as there is only about 100 spectators at each match you would think it wouldn't be hard to get the message out. The line calling has been horrible. Also, playing the sound of a beating heart during the Hawkeye replays is just creepy. On the upside, playing "Girl's Just Wanna Have Fun" during Nalbandian and Mayer's change-overs was hilarious. ETA - OK, so I take it I'm the only one watching Shanghai. Does that mean I'm the only one that had to witness this? d.yimg.com/a/p/sp/getty/0d/fullj.6043a2c921f43de5d1e02c803fce67ca/6043a2c921f43de5d1e02c803fce67ca-getty-506525464.jpgI don't know what's wrong with that boy.
