I wasn't able to see much today as it turned out, only the start of the first match but I guess I'm not surprised it all turned out this way. I know I'm not excited for either of these finals, will probably watch part of them, maybe not all though Maria may well have it in the bag before I finish my coffee. Though I'd love to be proven wrong.
I guess I'm not surprised that Numbers 1 and 2 are going at it in the men's final but I just can't get into it. Will look in probably, then on to the next Slam.
I remember that too, lt, I think that was in 2008, when Roger ended up his Slam year by winning the USO. Sigh...I hope he stays around too. It helps that he loves tennis so much.

I have no problem with Kvitova winning but not because Maria's serve has deserted her again.
Love that Royal Box full of the royalty of women's tennis. Especially Lindsay and Martina H. trading commentary over the guy sitting between them. Last I looked, they were tearing through the Women's Invitational together.
There was a few minutes of silence and I was so excited that Mary and Ted had learned they didn't need to fill up every second of quiet but it turned out the mics weren't working.

I'm really happy with the way Kvitova is playing and I hope she pulls it off, even if I do feel sympathy for Maria's struggles. However, agree that the commentary is as awful as always.
Ted just made the inevitable comment that Rafa is right handed and plays left. Couldn't that wait till tomorrow to bore people during the men's final?
And yes Mary's annoying laugh is back. Why should she laugh at the expense of either player?

Yeah, I so much want someone to win, not one to lose. And even b4 it sta-ted I was thinking damn how much is it gonna suck fo- Masha if she doesn't get this? A lot. Kvitova isn't the f-esh new teenage- that Masha was when she stunned Se-ena, but this would be a huge leap up. Ma-tina Nav has been picking he- all along I think. Again I say - just play good matches okay, just play!

And that's when I decided to watch on the computer. Funny enough, the stream is with John McEnroe, Tracy Austin and a Brit (BBC maybe?) but they aren't talking through the points. John and Tracy usually do--is that an edict from the US producers? 'Cause this is much nicer. And since they don't go to commercial during the breaks that's when they do most of their talking.
That's the other thing I noticed--John and Tracy are being complimentary of the player currently playing better and not the one who isn't. That's nice, especially now that we're in a break-fest of a 2nd set.

I'm so happy for Kvitova! And here we are with the second Slam in a row with a new women's champion.
Right after she won, I thought, I've never even heard this girl talk. We will now! And how sweet to see the tears in her father's eyes.

Look at her dorky brothers! Love it.
Love that it was talking about Martina and Jana that made her start to cry. Sorry that Maria had cried before the ceremony but she held it together well.
Why is Anna Wintour in Petra's box? Was that Anna? Was that Petra's box? Sitting behind the guy with the mullet?
Right before the last game the British commentator asked John and Tracy to describe what Kvitova was going through as she sat through that changeover and then getting up to serve. Their answers, while obvious, were so timely and so exactly what Kvitova was feeling that I started getting nervous through osmosis. That's good commentary. . .
Ha! She forgot the trophy for a second. Adorable. If anyone wants to watch the real "after" of the match, go to the stream. They're showing her walking around lugging the trophy and stuff.

Not the p-ettiest win, but plenty decisive. Damn at this time last yea- I don't think I even knew who Kvitova was. I can't help but feel bad fo- Masha even though I haven't usually been a fan. But y'know, you have to b-ing it, sometimes you can be lucky enough to have a newcome- choke it away, but if you count on that, well then you don't dese-ve it. Not saying she did expect that, but expe-ience was no help at all in this match.
US TV - yes, they do bug the commentato-s all the time to "fill the silence", no dead ai-, not allowed to just let it play out and speak fo- itself.
So, going off a bit - the Invitational doubles must be a round-robin, no? Could swea- I've seen B-ad Gilbe-t lose twice, and othe-s scheduled to play who've al-eady lost. I mean, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me, and maybe they just keep putting up all the matches, even the past ones?

Well, I just had to share this story with you all. It's my Great Grandmother's birthday today, and she's turning 99 years young! And my brothers and I decided to go to her house early this morning so we could watch the match while we prepare for this afternoon's celebration.
Anyway, we were all watching in the living room while she was sleeping in her recliner. Normally, that woman can sleep through a freight train going by. So you can imagine our surprise when after a particularly boisterous point by Sharapova, my Granny suddenly springs up out of sleep and yells at the TV "What the FUCK is HER problem!!" I don't know what's funnier, the fact that she was yelling at the TV (which she doesn't usually do) or the fact that we had no answer.

It could be that your 99 year old grandmother said "fuck"? Very funny.

Thrilled for Petra Kvitova! She reminds me of a female Del Potro for that bedrock calm and the way she lopes about the court. So refreshing that she is a mentally tough competitor. She definitely got nervous in that second set (missing those easy sitters) but she shook it off and worked through it. Sharapova may not have served that well, but I don't think her 6 doubles dictated the outcome. Kvitova was always going to be in control of this match with those tricky lefty serves and her superior pace of shot, the question was just whether the occasion would overwhelm her.
Petra was clearly happy but I actually found her immediate reaction to be a little understated. She looked more like she'd won Brisbane or something, lol.
I know Sasha Vujacic was just supporting his fiance, but damn his reactions annoyed me.

For a player known for nerves in big time matches (like in the Li Na match), that last game of Petra's is what convinced me she will be in more situations like this. Sure there were edgy points in the middle of the set but when she could see the finish line, she was the one who stepped up. Her immediate reaction was understated, yes, but the more time that passed, the more you began to see that she was still in shock. So sweet and awkward.
It's going to be weird watching Maria matches once Sasha is back to basketball (though with the lockout now, who knows when that would be).
I'm more nervous about this ladies doubles final than I was about the singles final. It would be so awesome if Sam and Sabine can win this - they're up a break in the first already. The things I will likely remember years from now on the ladies side are the way Petra played the final and Sabine's run. Having a title with it would be a nice capper.

I was pretty much going to be happy no matter who won but wish Maria played better. Congrats to Kvotiva (for winning) and Masha (for even making herself part of the conversation this year). I wish I had watched it on stream instead after hearing people rave about it.
Any predictions for tomorrow? I can't even bring myself to watch live because I'm sure Djokovic has got this. And as much as I enjoy him, I hate his family. Can't watch them celebrate.
