Just read that Fish will miss the Oz Open because he's not sufficiently recovered from the heart issue. He's planning to return to the Indian Wells, Miami tournaments.

Steve Tignor has posted an entry into the usual year-ending compilations with his "aces" and "faults" for the year. Coming up AcesFinding FaultsIt reminded me of some big good and bad moments of the year that had slid to the back of my memory. The Monfils/Kukushkin debacle for instance, as well as Venus' reception during her match against Kerber at the U.S. Open, and that dust-up between Berdych and Almagro at the Aussie. Why are so many male Czech players so hard to warm up too? Berdych's prickliness, particularly the fact that it never seems to go away, fascinates me. He seems to make himself unlikeable almost by accident.

It sounds as if Rafa and the knees had been iffy to begin with, then having to rest due to the virus meant his conditioning would be poor (for him), hence the withdrawal.

Yeah, that was my impression too. I read that he's now aiming to make his return in Acapulco.
I saw Venus play her first Hopman cup match earlier. She won in 3 sets over 2+ hours with 44 winners and an equal number of UE's. A scratchy start for her. I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that she'll make it back into the top 5 this year.
And Andrea Petkovic had to drop out of the Hopman cup already with a torn meniscus. I swear, she's the female Tommy Haas with all these injuries. She just can't catch a break.

Word to your whole post there Fala. Venus was very inconsistent but I think she really improved as the match went on.
Petkovic being the female Tommy Haas is sort of funy given that she's teamed up with him for the Hopman Cup.
I've been watching faithfully of course as the Hopman Cup is one of my favourite tournaments of the year. Watched Spain vs. France today. The mixed doubles match was a great match and they all appeared to have fun playing it. I don't think there is a male tennis player with a better smile or more charisma than Tsonga. He really just lights up the whole court.
