What a tournament Kevin Anderson is having so far. I can't believe how happy I am that he beat Fer. My crushes, they are fleeting. . . I just really like seeing the gone-to-college kids do well.

I see the at Monfils and Simon are playing each other today. I don't know if anyone here remembers their Australian Open match from 2009 but it had to be the most boring match I've ever seen. They both just sort of stood there and hit the ball to each other, for two sets, like they were just out for a hit on the neighborhood court. The cameras kept panning around the audience and all you could see were people yawning. This isn't from that match. It's from a match of theirs in 2011 but it's exactly how their match looked in 2009. www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8iunyDh4ms

That Hamburg match gets my vote for most boring match I've ever seen. No plans to see this one. If I want to see two French players against each other, I'll root for Tsonga and Gasquet against unseeded opponents to win their matches today so they face each other next round.

Breezy, what's Nico A cuddling in your photo? And is there a way to enlarge those photos? I often want to get a better look at them.

Harry - I don't know what it is but it's darn cute. Can you identify? . Also, does anyone know what on earth is in Verdasco's lap? The poor creature looks completely confused pissed-off.

Ha. That FO match is exactly what my family / friends (all non-tennis) think all tennis is like.
And sometimes - on a weak day - what I let myself fear from the clay season.
Will be awake at 2 am (CST) tonight. Who's in?
ETA: Those things look icky - but the smiles on the players' faces are priceless.

Darn, breezy, my co-worker who used to volunteer at a zoo just left. I love that thing on Fer's lap--whatever it is.

I did a bit of hunting online and I think Almagro is holding a baby tasmanian devil and Verdasco is holding a wombat.

Those animals are awesomeness personified! Thanks for the info, everybody, and for the enlarged photos, breezy.
And I plan on being up for Roger-Tomic, oops. Maybe I'll "see" you back here then.

Jamie Hampton has decided to host her own coming out party against a confused Azarenka. Down 1-5* in the first, she got the first set to 4-6 then took control of the second set immediately. She'd recently played a close match (6-7 6-7) against Radwanska in one of the warm-up events but this is a much bigger stage. You can sense Vika is going to smash a racquet any moment - but I think she needs to do that in order to win this match.
ETA: Hampton taking medical timeout when serving for the second set.
As for Roger-Bernie, as much as I'd like to watch it, I'm in a bowling tournament tomorrow at noon so I'm likely recording it. I'm waking up around 6:30 am (EST) to catch the end of the tennis action. Though I don't expect that match to still be airing then, the Simon/Monfils bore match or Raonic/Kohlschreiber will likely still be going.

Yay! Hampton wins the second set.
ETA: Oh well, it was a nice run for her nonetheless.

Tense match for Vika. I was rooting for Vika, but I hate it when someone is playing well and then their body betrays them.

OMG, I'm in love with ANOTHER young American woman. Jamie Hampton rocks. Sloan Stephens might actually be my third favorite among the new American women, and I adore her!
This is wonderful. There's now a good chance there will be tennis fandom for me after Roger retires. :-)

Too bad Hampton hurt her back. She could have won it. And ESPN is focusing on Maria vs Serena happening as if Maria's beaten Serena in the last 8 going on 9 years. Serena will never allow herself to lose to Maria ever again. That's not something to look forward to as a final.
I'll be up watching tonight. I don't see Roger being troubled by Tomic. Maybe 3 tight sets, but he'll win.
Venus...

Is there any doubt that Serena would give a beatdown to Maria in a final, especially given the Venus match?
Delpo, wake up! Your shots don't even sound right.
