The weather is 60% chance of rain for the men's final. It might be the only thing to help David. I like Rafa too, but I'd love for David to win. I need him to at least win a set.

Well- Serena won the first set but must say I was not expecting the two service breaks by Maria. Competitive first set.

Yes, it's lovely to see it's not a blowout. I mean when Serena gets like that she's an awesome sight to behold, but in a GS Final I want good tennis from both, and at least the possibility that either could win.
Works for me: I like Serena and want her to win, but I also admire Masha's game, and fight, and if she'd just shut the fuck up (I know, hopeless cause), I'd positively enjoy her.

Number 16, baby! I'm actually glad it was competitive. And listening to Maria talk made me like her. Hate the hype, but she seems nice and was very gracious. I'm thrilled for Serena.
And the men's doubles final on NBC is about to be shown.
A good morning. I hope tomorrow turns out to be a good match and David gets some sets off of Rafa.

Maria gives very gracious comments after she loses a match. Mahut is getting all banged up and having a tough time in the men's doubles final. Getting ready to set up my good luck shrine for David...Freakin...Ferrer tomorrow. Keeping the faith!!

chestylarue - doing the same regarding Ferrer.
I think that's about as good a match as we could have hoped for, given Serena's form. Maria was impressive.
GO NICO!

And makes me dislike Mary Carillo more than ever--did you hear her talking to Maria after the match? Trying to make Maria talk about how great Serena is? I felt so sorry for Maria having to explain that she's a pretty good player herself.
That doubles final was spectacular. Lobs, volleys, poaching, brilliant. I love how getting whacked in the leg was what got Mahut to loosen up. And that point where he ran into the flowers, dropped his racquet, got out of the flowers, picked up his racquet and hit the next ball? Insane. While I wish Llodra and Mahut had won, it was just too good of a match for me to be hating on the brothers. And if it weren't for them being in the final I wouldn't have gotten to see it on TV. I just hope Nicholas and Michael don't dwell on being up a mini break in the tiebreak and losing. They did tighten up, but the brothers picked it up right then too. Still, I would have loved to have heard that crowd go wild if the frenchmen had won. Oh well.

lt, generally everything that comes out of Mary's mouth makes me dislike her. And my goodwill for Maria just went goodbye with some of her comments in her presser.

What did she say skyz? There is no transcript yet on the RG site.

breezy, I'm no doubt being prickly. I've been reading too many comments about Serena being some hulking beast compared to Maria. Her serve is great but it's about placement, technique, and power. Maria's got a good couple of inches on Serena and broader shoulders to boot.
Ugh. I'm going to stop thinking about it.

Maria should quit when she's ahead. I wonder if she was salty based on the Carrillo conversation. You are right about the height and the breadth of shoulders. So when she's prissy and snitty on top of all her gifts - meh.
This men's match is painful. Come on, Dah-veed. Yay, Break point for 4-all!

I knew Maria's facade couldn't hold. The press knew it too and she finally took the bait. Geesh.
Despite the score, the first set of this men's final was quite competitive.

Huh, I'd have to have heard it to know what I think. But if y'all did and took a negative impression I'll take your word for it.
My 1st thoughts: Yes, Masha(6'2"?) has like a good 4 inches height on Serena(5'10"), and what with being an elite athlete(!) she's got some muscles on her, too. Masha ain't no delicate flower, and why would she be? OTOH, no doubt Serena is more muscular than about anybody - she's built like some of the sprinters, not like most in tennis. But she's also just a better tennis player, duh.
I avoid most comments about Serena (and Venus when applicable) cause there's way too much of that "hulking beast" bullshit along with both implicit and explicit racism, and I have no time for that shit. World is an ugly enough place without having to expose myself to people insulting those who gee, are merely models of excellence in their sport. Who calls Lindsey Vonn and Picabo Street hulking beasts? Okay, I bet they get called "fat", but that's just by fucking idiots who know nothing about what an elite athlete actually looks like. Fat they are not. And "fat" is bad and sexist enough, but it doesn't carry the not-so-subtle racism of "beast".
And jumping back to post match: It's fucking ridiculous that Masha should have to remind a tennis analyst that btw, I'm not so bad myself, okay? #2 in the world, was defending champion, 4 GS that also happens to be the career GS. The hype makes me nuts, but it's not all hype, she backs it up, and she fights to the goddamn death.
ETA: Aw, c'mon David, fight, compete, I honestly want to be wrong about Nadal rolling over you. I know you do always fight, but .....

I leave the room for two seconds to get another cup of coffee and when I come back I see a guy with a lit torch is being lead off the court. WTF!

Yeah- that seemed to rattle both players. There were two guys out there.
I just have to think whenever something like that happens Monica Seles goes through all players.
Oh well, I was wrong. I had deluded myself into thinking David had a chance. He had to go for too much - kept hitting it out by a little. And Rafa played so very well.
Very happy for Rafa. Wow- what a clay court player. His records at RG really are astounding.
