On Gulbis. How you disappoint me so.
Kei is out as well. Fernando. Really?
Yay Venus. So glad I didn't listen to th Serena match, I do like my Rena unapologetic though. Announcers annoy me. Worst announcing I ever heard was Gimelstob doing a Serena match. Or maybe just a Serena highlight. I can't remember exactly what he said. I've blocked it. I remember wanting to put s hammer through his skull.

Gulbis and Verdasco's losses are not unexpected (that said, Ernie destroyed my bracket). Nishikori is the stunner. He was one match away from breaking the Top 10 only a few weeks ago! He was absolutely bossed around the entire match, especially by Evans' slice. I wondered if he properly prepared for the match, a problem that can occur when drawing a rather unknown qualifier.

I've always been a big James fan, but, Harvard guy or not, I've never really heard him be all that interesting, and he has a terrible, flat quality to his voice that would be rough to listen to at length, particularly in voice-over when we couldn't be distracted by his looks. His voice is much worse than MJF's when she started doing commentary.
It's funny that you mention his looking like he has an AI disorder. I never would have pegged that, but he didn't look like himself, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out what was different. I was wondering if it was the lack of beard.

Nishikori really played a lackluster match against Feliciano in Cincy. Not saying he gave up but, he wasn't into the match, and it showed. I thought maybe it was the heat, but who knows.
And, harry, I forgot about James' voice. I didn't listen to the press conference, but you're right, his voice isn't for commentating. But when has that ever stopped anyone? Gimolstob will probably hook James up at Tennis Channel.

James did DC commentary and seemed okay in the booth. The key is interrupting him.

James's freshly shaved head made him look paler than usual, although he did look a little sallow. He also had been crying, so his eyes were pink. Not a good look for him.

Damn, there are people winning matches who I've literally never heard of, never seen the name, nothing. I know it's a Slam and 132, but there was a time when I easily knew that many tennis players. Maybe the occasional home wild card would be unknown to me, but that was it. Joao Sousa? Ajla Tomljanovic? Both into the 2nd round.
Y'all are brave who fill out draws. I tried that once and I was just hopeless. A few seeds out today, some middling upsets I guess, but none I'd consider shocking. Except maybe Sousa(who?) over Dmitrov. But hey, just because I don't know him doesn't mean he's not good, or that one was on and the other just off today.

acre - Joao Sousa & Maximo Gonzalez (who beat Janowicz) are clay courters so no reason whatsoever to consider them. Dimitrov losing isn't a shocker because he is horrific at the majors.
Today has been a weird day. Not #wimbleweird, but weird. Those two clay courters winning, Isner bageling anyone, Donald Young loses two games to the player who beat Tsonga last year, Errani double bageling anyone, leading up to the biggest shocker of the tournament: 17 year old Vicky Duval beating Sam Stosur.

Yeah, but unfortunately I'm never actually surprised when Stosur loses. She's shown she can lose to anyone at anytime, it's too bad.

leading up to the biggest shocker of the tournament: 17 year old Vicky Duval beating Sam Stosur. Holy shit. I came here a couple hours ago after having seen a few games in the first set to comment on how impressive Duval looked just keeping up with Stosur. In particular, I saw her break Stosur twice in the first set. Even if she had gone on to lose, which I fully expected her to do, it was still an admirable performance for someone at her level. I actually typed up a quick message and then deleted it because I felt it sounded like I was getting all wound up about nothing. Little did I know. Very good for her!

Surprised, and yet not surprised by Sam's exit. Pretty exciting day for Victoria Duval. Also, I thought it sweet that she is wearing Venus's clothing line.
Serena and Azarenka have made pretty impressive starts to this tournament. Too bad the same could be said for their outfits. Serena's is not flattering and Victoria's is just dowdy.

My irrational loathing of Sam Stosur had me doubly thrilled with the Duval win. However, her voice is Ana Ivanovic levels of babyvoice. Vicky's seems less of an affectation, but it still made my ears bleed.

This is what I hate about the US Open, their stupid scheduling. They knew it was going to rain on and off all day and knew they still had 1st round men's matches to get done. Why not schedule Andy during the day and 1st up as well as Del Po and all the other men still in the 1st round? I know people would complain about the women not playing, but common sense says get the 1st round over with. So annoying.

I wish Venus had dumped David Witt a long time ago. He seems like such a yes man and does whatever Venus wants, which sucks because new ideas for Venus would be great. But Venus is so stubborn it's ridiculous.
