I felt a little badly for Carla, but then I saw the size of her check for the quarters. $325,000 is a hell of a birthday present. And wholeheartedly earned, even if she did get routed.

Darn, I should not have turned on the Ferrer/Gasquet QF stream--Richard was winning until I turned it on. . . We're now about ready to go into a fifth. I think the crowd is rooting for Gasquet because another Rafa/Ferrer match up is not something to look forward to. (And does anyone think Tommy has a chance tonight?)

Way to blow it David. Eh, I've never liked him anyway.

I refused to turn the stream on at all because, once I saw 6-3 5-1, I figured I should check back in a few hours.
So yeah. It was exactly that. Allez!
lt - My suspicion is that the crowd knew Richard's history, combined with his match against Raonic. Something about this made me think a little of last year's final, complete with the dynamics of the players involved.

You know, as painful as it was seeing Roger lose the way he did to Robredo, at least we Roger fans were spared the sight of Rafa flattening him the way he did poor TR tonight.

Yes, that was painful. I turned the channel during the second set. I definitely don't enjoy tennis like that.
Pleased to find on my PVR recordings this morning that Serena and Venus's doubles match was shown. So much fun to watch. I did discover however that no matter how many times you scream "shut up Pam" at the television she just doesn't stop talking. At all. Ever.

You made it a lot longer than me--I turned it off after 3-0 in the first. Got to see Strah, so that was worth it, especially since he doesn't sit in the President's Box, he gets himself a front-row seat. But the beat down wasn't the only reason I turned it off, I just CANNOT with John and PMac and their slobbering. It isn't just Rafa, they did it with Roger as well and I'm sure Djoker too, but it is impossible to listen to. Luckily, Andy does not lend himself to that sort of adulation and his matches exasperate the commentators so that's more fun to listen to.
Oh, and Max is in the mixed finals again! Yippee!

Oh, these men's Qtr's! Good on Stan and Youhzny for getting there, but at this point I think we all know the only people capable of playing with Djok and Andy are, well, Djok and Andy, and Nadal. Maybe, sometimes Fed, but no longer routinely. They've got a 3 man band, no-one else allowed. Heh, well you can try, good luck, and yes there is the odd upset. Emphasis on odd.
Guess Gasquet will supplant Fed at 7? How low have I fallen, I just want Fed in the top 10, no who am I kidding he must make the YEC!! Then I can just say "bad year", "horrible summer", I know you won't be #1 again (last summer was a total shock), may not win another Slam, okay. 32yo, bad back, and oh yeah, you have 17! It's enough, just play decently, be the elder statesman, fine by me.
Luckily for me I like Nadal a lot, LOVE Djok's game and am okay with him as a person, Andy fails to thrill me on any level, but at least I can admire his talent, skill, craft. And Tommy Haas burns evergreen, Monfils seems to be mostly a waste of a huge talent but a totally entertaining one, Jo-Willy?(come back!), DelPo get healthy .... lots of men I can get behind, even sans Fed.
Same somewhat on the women, but then we meet the banshee wailing. Vika? Masha? I might like you, I might even want to like you, but I just can't. Can't listen, can't watch, can't care. At times of great excitement, hey let er rip, but every fucking point? Give me a break. I know everyone grunts, squeals, yells at big moments and maximum effort(men and women both) ...that's okay, the rest of the time, just keep it down PLEASE!

I do think Stan has a real chance of beating Andy, given Murray's form so far. Stan's problem is going to be the occasion (a chance for his first SF) while being the last Swiss player standing for the first time.
acre - Federer is actually moving up to #6 no matter what happens now due to Delpo's early loss. But in the Race standings, yeah, that got a lot more interesting.
Race Standings as of 9/4 (plus if Wawrinka and Gasquet win next rounds): 4 David Ferrer 4900 5 Tomas Berdych 3405 6 Juan Martin Del Potro 3320 7 Roger Federer 3055 8 Richard Gasquet 2765 (3245/4045) 9 Stanislas Wawrinka 2565 (2925/3405/4205) 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 2455
"burning evergreen"? I like that. Does seem to describe Tommy well and I don't know why.

Ooh, ooh, ooh! Paes/Stepanek are serving for the match against the Bryans! I don't like Paes/Stepanek as a team at all but to no longer hear "going for the calendar slam" about the Bryans will be so great! Only (big) problem is that if they lose, no way CBS airs the doubles final.
eta: and Paes gets broken. Heh. They're still up a break though.

lt - the thing about that "calendar slam" hype is that doubles finally got significant attention. Their matches against Nestor/Pospisil, Fleming/Marray and Paes/Stepanek were great for showcasing that lost art, that it's not just singles players swooping in and hitting hard while making the number one team in the world look horrible (I like Venus/Serena as a team but that's what their match against Vinci/Errani looked like).
That said, Paes and Stepanek did come off as jerks.

Ashe is like upset central today. Can Andy come back from two sets down against Stan? I certainly hope so.
The Bryan Brothers and doubles is like a snake eating its own tail--so many teams broke up after 2012 because they wanted to be able to beat the Bryans but no one can achieve the relationship that those twins have so matches were rarely exciting when they were involved. I love a good doubles match more than I love a good singles match but I'm not going to like those two just because they win or are achieving something no one else has a prayer to achieve.
Not a fan of the Williams' double play either. That's the women's doubles I don't enjoy watching. But happy for Venus to have such a nice, deep run through the Open.

Well moon knew better than me on the Andy-Stan match! Not that it's over, but it's definitely competitive, too competitive for Andy if he'd had his druthers I bet.

So the hyped matches turned into Rafa and Novak separated by two guys who, for different reasons, have been compared to Federer.
