I agree with you too curly. If her retirement ends next year it will be on par with a two year ban for doping, which some people suspect is why she quit so suddenly.
I don't know if she was or not but she certainly isn't a great sportswoman, and no matter how beautiful her game is, can't make up for lack of class on the court. I hope she stays gone.

Kleybanova is unfit. I remember watching her at the Australian Open against Dokic... and her tennis is so unorthadox. Watching that backhand is almsot painful. I wonder how she can recover from a shot like that!

Ok, here's my hatred for the day:
Rain during a Grand Slam
Makes me feel like I'm six years old and have just been told that Christmas is cancelled.

splat Thank you so much for passing along that info. I would have been all excited to watch and I refuse to believe that HS can produce anything of value that is tennis related!
barelyawake I agree that haterade of rain is entirely appropriate. Everyone wanted to see some at Wimby and it was basically a no-show.

I live in the desert, so when it rains here, I do actually act like a kid at Christmas. But that's here -- not New York! Damn it.
My hate today? Squealing/grunting/screaming. SHUT UP. Many great players didn't/don't have to make noise while they were/are going about their greatness. So stop your screaming squeal, or your whiny grunt (I'm looking at both of you, Nadal and Gonzales), or whatever. It's not necessary, and it just makes me hate you. SHUT THE FUCK UP.

I love Gonzo's grunt. He always sounds like he's saying "Oy!" which, coming from a NY Jew family, cracks me up every time.

It would be nice if I had a positive association with some of this fucking noise that some players make, but unfortunately I don't.
Also, as long as there's a rain delay: I hate the way broadcast/ers refer to Toni Nadal as "Uncle Toni." Hey, it's not YOUR uncle, so don't call him that. Call him by name. Do they say "Papa Sharapova" or "Daddy Williams"? I don't know why it infuriates me so much, but it does. It drives me mad.
(Yeah, I'm a little pissy today. SO WHAT?)

I hate that the USO and opening weekend for the NFL overlap. It's been that way for as long as I can remember (maybe not opening day, but the overlap) and I've always hated it. Nothing is going to change but this weekend in particular it's the sports version of Sophie's Choice for me

I hate that the USO and opening weekend for the NFL overlap. It's been that way for as long as I can remember (maybe not opening day, but the overlap) and I've always hated it. What drives me CRAZY about this, is that CBS can just move the mens final to prime time so Boomer ASSiason and Jim Brown can host their self-fellating 30-minute post game show where everyone's crazycrazycrazy and they run down the damn scores THAT THEY JUST RAN DURING THE FREAKING GAME FIVE MINUTES AGO. But every year they schedule only 3 hours for a football game AND the stupid post game show and the men's final is slated to begin at 4:00pm so that it will be finished by 7:00 so CBS can run the 60 Minutes repeat on time on the east coast, but the match usually begins 30-40 minutes late and then the guys have to sit around waiting for a bunch of jackasses to stop braying about football and the match runs long. Who knew that would happen? Except everyone who's ever watched a USO mens final since CBS got the NFL back!!!!! Why won't they just schedule the men's final in prime time?

maybe they should schedule the USO to end on a Saturday so the men could have a prime time final? But you know then it would rain for 4 days straight. Face it, USTA, this is Hurricane season and even if we've been lucky this year, we are still having lousy weather. and it's been said that global warming will make this kind of thing worse in the future. Time to build that roof?

I have to quote this entire thing:
Could not agree more! The worst thing that happened to the Open was CBS getting football back. Final Sunday went from being all alone to having football on other channels to our current mess of being shunted off because of, as you say, braying about football. The first few years I panicked that the tennis had started by CBS just wasn't going to it yet.
Oh, and I love football--but this is tennis season, thank you very much, and I will ignore my Giants for the first weekend because tennis takes precedence.

How about this: New England in late summer. Erratic weather, etc. Move the USO to Chicago! We've been rain-free for weeks! (Just don't hold it in June - miserable and more northwest than the northwest)

I'm usually on the linespeople's side, but calling a foot fault (and a very close one at that) on match point is pretty horrid. It may be wrong, but I'm hating on that linesperson.

Well, I am a little annoyed at the linesperson, but I'm hating on Serena for being a total whiny baby about the foot fault. She should have just let it go and served it out. By not doing that, she screwed Kim for the win, and it makes me lose a lot of respect for her. This is coming from a huge Serena/Venus fan. I've been watching tennis for 10 years and I have never seen such a disgusting display.
