So, some of us were talking about what Gael Monfils must have looked like as a kid. I found video of him when he was 11 years old. It's almost two much to bear. He's got the whole package: glasses, tucked-in too-big tennis outfit, retainer, and a hair cut that is dangerously close to a high-top fade. Ahh, the 90's! I can't take it. If you're going to watch, be prepared for sugar shock.

I just saw that the Williams sisters have the number one ranking in doubles! Serena is number one in singles and doubles, impressive. That video falafaclese of Gael is fabulous, very funny. He looks so cute in it and so young. Thanks for posting it.

So Youzhny got bounced in the first round at Zagreb. Just like he did at the Ozzy Open. I don't understand how someone can go from 8 to 62 in the rankings in one year unless they miss a bunch of time for injury, which he did not. Has anyone seen him play this year? And this www.atpworldtour.com/5/photos/gallery/2009/johannesburg/m2.jpgis too cute. I love the tiny lion cub being all ferocious and ready to attack Ferrer.

That is quite a bizzare drop... Youzhny is a great player... perhaps something personally has gotten in the way of his career? Look at Dokic. From #4 in 02, she then left daddy dearest and her problems started, thus her ranking fell. Myskina, went from winning French Opens and went as high as #2 to having her mother fall sick and her game go missing for the better part of the 05-06 seasons (she is now pregnant and I think almost due, so CONGRATS Mymy!)

Oh, breezybee, thank you! That kind of equals Fer with the penguin.
And, falafaclese, I really wish I could remember my French because I'd love to hear what they were saying. Was Gael's opponents mother saying Gael was awesome? I love the long skinny legs and the retainer most especially but the fact that he still has those same cheeks is so cute.

Has anyone read Bodo's Fed column? I usually skip his musings but was actually able to get thru this one...I'd be curious what others think...

Can you provide a link? I've forgotten where Bodo posts his rants. It looks like John Tomic is making a run for the title of Worst Tennis Parent Ever by possibly getting his kid, Bernard Tomic, banned for life from ITF events. The penalty seems ridiculously harsh for a 16 year old. Even Jeff Tarango didn't get a lifetime ban after his infamous Wimbledon default.

That seems insane. I could understand banning the parent maybe but it does seem ridiculous to punish a 16 year old like that.
Maria Sharapova's withdrawn from Dubai and Paris due to her shoulder recovery. It's a little troubling that her recovery seems to be taking so long. She and her camp claim everything is right on track but I don't know if I fully believe that.

I don't. A few commentators at the Ozzie Open said that this shoulder injury is the very same one Capriati has had for the past five years... I certainly hope Maria's isn't a tenth a sbad otherwise... I don't want to think about it. She WILL GET BETTER!

I had not heard them say it was the same thing Capriati had (is it sad that my first thought for shoulder injuries is Pam Shriver? Does that make me old or sad? Or both?). If it is the same thing Capriati had, then there is probably reason to worry. Like you said, hopefully no where near as bad and hopefully taking all this time off to recover will really allow for a full healing. I think Maria is good for the game in a lot of respects.

I do to. She has this glamor that no one else on tour has that attracks a lot of attenion to the sport. She FIGHTS like no other and is still young with plenty of improvement left in her game and more majors to win.

Speaking of attracting attention, staying in the shallow end for a while, Dani Hantuchova, Tatiana Golovin and Maria Kirilenko were photographed for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. I figure there's so much ogling of the guys around here, there should be some equal time given. They all look great. Dani always seemed so painfully skinny to me when she's playing, but she looks really good, except that they seem to have either gone heavy with the white face powder or the body tanner, because there seems to be a two-tone thing going on in some of her pics. Like I said though, they all look great to me. There's a lot of good tennis this week. I have been following Paris for the women, and Rotterdam and San Jose for the men. Channelsurfing.net has been pretty good with coverage so far this year.

Thanks for that! Muchly appreciated! Speaking of Tatiana... where has she been lately? Have I just missed her or has she been out injure?

Tatiana was out for a while because of a surgery she had, and then she had problems with a lingering back injury. Last I heard, she plans to come back, but as of right now appears to be out indefinitely. I don't think she has played anywhere since early last year.
