Why does Bud Collins still have a job? Seriously - you've been around forever and can't remember how to pronounce Navratilova? Someone please take him out back and shoot him. I didn't hear it myself, but one thing I can say about Bud, he takes great pains to learn the proper pronunciation of names even when the proper pronunciation isn't the popular one, so maybe he was actually pronouncing it correctly. That said, he still needs to go home and stay there. I find him annoying too.

I live in the shallow end.
Go GLATCH!
What's going on with Feli Lopez?

Martina is a huge Maria fan and was talking about how Maria gets an unfair shake from crowd at the French but I don't think she realizes how Maria can alienate crowds. Last year against Safina she was yelling at them. Granted -the "allez up your ass!" was golden but that will not endear a player to a crowd.
Martina was also making it sound like Maria is the only player who says what she thinks. I think Serena, Safina and Elena are very quick to give their true opinions.
All of that stated- it is good for the game to have someone like Maria. But she is disliked by the other ladies on the tour - heck, she makes Soderling on the men's side look beloved. So I don't think it is always the other folks being unfair- it can be her. But I am glad she is back.
Not all players can be beloved. Before he started collecting AARP discounts on the tour- Connors was incredibly disliked. Even by his home crowd. At the 1977 US Open final- the crowd was cheering heavily for Vilas. But Connors added to the game- even if as a child in the 1980s I loathed him.
I am actually Bud is still getting work. He has an encyclopediatic knowledge of the game and although he is a little nutty- he is one of those announcers that really seems to love the game

I always hated Connors myself. Something about his tiny little shorts and stupid hair. Maria does bring it on herself, and I think she likes it. I think the women's game could do with a strong villian. It might make some of them play up to their potential. I'm looking at you, Ana Ivanovic. Oh, what am I saying. The Sharapova Shark will take out Big Baby Panda Ana every time.

Sharapova "Allez Up Your F***ING ASS!" - www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsXhwSQGWKkOK, maybe Bud doesn't need to be shot and yes, he knows tons, but there just comes a time, you know? Come to the matches, sit in a luxury box, and enjoy retirement. I've never really followed Roddick, but I just realized - when I watch his matches (for about the past year), my gut is filled with the same mixture of hope and dread that I felt while watching Blake. Oy.

Wow. Feli into a 5th set.
eta:
Yeah, I agree. He now makes me very uncomfortable when he talks--the Australian was painful. However, I don't feel the same way about Enberg. Maybe because he doesn't try for the quirky like Bud does?

Watching some of the Bartoli match. Someone needs to clue her in to the fact that the ball won't necessarily come to her and sometimes she will have to run to hit the ball. She keeps standing there watching the ball fly through the court.

Enberg bothers me because he can't reel in the majestic, sweeping, emotional vista-type comments. He's done so much voiceover work for opening and closing sequences that he can't drop that cadence. Everything sounds too...soppy.
Bud is just like you're annoying neighbor who has lived there for 306 years and knows the history of every house in the cul de sac. Sure, it's nice to have as a resource, but really, shut up.
I just read the Nadal blog from Times Online. His blog IS boring, just like he suspects. It's all "I had pasta for dinner and was late to practice." I still read it.
Roddick is going to prove me wrong and win his first round match. That's a total shocker.
ETA: Feli is up a break in the 5th.

There are certain players I get ridiculously pleased when they can come back from two sets down. Hewitt, being the tenacious terrier that he is, didn't surprise me yesterday. Feli just shocked the heck out of me and I couldn't be happier.

Feli pulled it out in an apparently exhausting five sets. The radio guys were saying both players were both totally spent. Feli will probably be useless in his second round match.
Bolelli/Berdych are in the fifth with Bolelli up a break.
Ginepri is out. Parmentier has 2 break points against Bartoli.
ETA: lt, I'm with you on liking it when some players pull it out. I'm thrilled for Feli but I hate when Berdych does it. Why weren't there cameras on 3? Hmmm??
Parmentier broke. Bolelli has match points. And Berdych double faults.

I'm so happy Feli pulled off that win. When I saw he lost the first two sets, I was depressed. I don't ever expect him to do well on clay, because he's the rare Spaniard who doesn't really like it. And his opponent, though I don't know much about him, is from Brazil and came through Qualies. Always a tough match. But these kinds of matches (down 2 sets) used to almost always be an automatic loss for Feli. It's always nice to see him not give up even though he's probably exhausted at that point. Well, not 'see' because that court isn't televised. Grr.
Anyway, he probably won't have much left for his second round match. But I'm just glad he made it through the first. Every point helps because unless he makes the QF's again at Wimbledon (not a safe bet), he's going to be losing a lot of points.
I like Rafa's outfit. But then I've always bought into the whole 'Real Men Wear Pink' thing. The yellow doesn't really go with it, but whatever.

I like Rafa's outfit too, in fact, I've really liked Nike's color palette all year with the saturated colors and the unusual 70's-esque contrasting color combos. Not usually my thing, but it dig it. Watching some of the Bartoli match. Someone needs to clue her in to the fact that the ball won't necessarily come to her and sometimes she will have to run to hit the ball. She keeps standing there watching the ball fly through the court. She must have heard you breezy, because she's had some pretty nice looking movement play and net points in the latter half of the third set. What I have seen of this match has been entertaining. ETA: I like these little up close and personal segments they're doing on some of the up and coming women. I wonder if the WTA did them, because I haven't seen any on the men.
