One of the questions asked was "what's the best match you ever watched?". Tursunov went on this extended rant about how the 2008 Wimby match between Federer and Nadal wasn't that great and people are just jumping on a bandwagon because they don't really know anything about tennis and to him it was 5 hours of watching Nadal pick his underwear out of his ass.

It was heartbreaking to see her look up to her coach and say "I'm such a chicken. Why am I such a chicken?"
Ugh, that's got to be a horrible feeling

I feel bad for Safina -- she was my pick to win it all. But Kuzy is good, too, and I won't be mad if she wins.

Oh! That was horrifying. Sveta couldn't even celebrate that was so sad.
It's going to get worse and worse for Dinara until she can finally win a slam--but it's going to be so hard for her. I'm gutted for the poor thing.

And... it was another of THOSE all Russian finals. Poor Dinara. And in a way, poor Sveta, because that wasn't.. a joyful win. That was.. ehh.
For love of all things good in sports, tomorrow has to have a more competitive final than this.

Poor Safina. I was good with either of them winning but my heart just breaks for her. Maybe she's more like Marat than she thinks.

The first set looked like we were in for a competitive match. I couldn't even concentrate on how well Sveta was playing in the second set because Dinara was a trainwreck I couldn't look away from.

It's so sad to watch someone who's such a fighter become unable to fight when it matters most. I'm very happy for Kuzy though. I knew no matter who won here, I'd have some disappointment for the other person. I just wish it had been more of a battle, because this wasn't fun to watch.

This is a huge accomplishment for Kuzy, and I hate that I don't feel as excited as I should because it wasn't much of a fight at the end.

I know--Svetlana deserves my glee, but it just isn't there right now.
Dinara is Adidas. I think it is time for a trip to Las Vegas and a little conversation with Gil Reyes. She doesn't need the coaching physically, but she has some mental hurdles she needs to deal with.
eta: Awww, Sveta sounded so animated talking about meeting Steffi. That's so cute.

My TV signal has died on me, due to the storm we're having here, so I'm having to rely on a Japanese web feed. It's adding the sheer weirdness of today's events.
I can't believe Sveta is only 23. Seems like she's been around so much longer than Dinara. She's talking to some TV person now and she's pretty adorable. Talking about how she can't get through to her mother on the phone and that she knows how Dinara is suffering right now. It's a shame, I've already seen a million and one twitter comments saying how "some unfortunate looking chick won". She deserves a lot more respect than that.

I was thinking the same thing when Sveta was talking about them in juniors the other day.
I really like Kuznetsova's game so I hope this win kicks her yips out. It will be nice to see her play without worrying she was about to collapse. Oh man, this interview with Mary, she's really a sweetie, isn't she?
admin, I just went to see what was going on with Kafelnikov and that match is already over. Dang.

I find the dynamic between Dinara and her coach to be awfully unsettling.
Maybe I'm being unfair b/c tennis is a sport that is rife with really fucked up female player/male coach dynamics, AL Groenefeld, Schneider (and her first coach/guru not the current husband/coach) and of course the parade of psycho fathers comes to mind...
Anyway, I'm rarely in agreement with Ted Robinson but I'm hoping that her 3 set wins over Serena, Stosur and now this title win mark a new awesome phase for Sveta.

Lackluster doesn't begin to describe it. (Hows the vodka? Hee!)
Not at all drunk and not at all excited. This is another women's tournament that was so closley contested, and in many ways as entertaining as the men's side and yet the we get ANOTHER crappy final. The past seven finals have all been straight sets displays (thought last years WIlliams final was superb.)
The match started off well IMO. But as the first set progressed it became very clear that Dinara was wanting to HIT THROUGH her opponent. She wasn't working her around, mixing it up. Sveltana just played solid tennis, mixed up a few points, exposed Dinara's movement and stiff nerves and then it all fell apart in that second set (I missed it, I had to pick my sister up from a party, I get back home to see them kissing at the net!) And then when the celebtration/speaches came about, that understandably felt very down beat. It was great to see Stephi there (she is looking better with age!)
But as I said, putting aside this final, the women's tournament was a great one. I am very happy to see Svetlana come through and win her second major. She is a superb player. This surface suits her game very well. She is deffinatley one of the most complete players out there today. I hope her all the best. She can win more slams!
Dinara will win one soon. I think the US Open will be hers. Just a weird feeling. But they are never usually right. She did not play well today but will find her form and hopefully have a great Wimbledon.

Ugh -- a tough one to watch. So sad for Safina and her adorable tear-stained face. But, all congrats to Sveta for holding her nerve in a GS final for the first time in years.
This is why we need more villians in tennis -- it's too hard when you like both of the players in a final.
Anyway, this makes me really hope that Dinara can win Wimby.
