Gonzo's nostrils frighten me. If he takes a deep sniff, Lleyton might get sucked up and never return.

But the eyes, tiki, the eyes. And if Hewitt weren't such a wee little man, it wouldn't be a problem at all.
Momo won her match. Yay her.

And she looked pretty good doing it too. I hope she has a good tournament

At the risk of sounding ignorant (like that's ever stopped me before) -- I don't know either player's game all that well, but why is Hewitt hitting so much to Gonzo's forehand? Hoping it will break down?
I just noticed Youzhny is playing (and losing in the first) -- time to check in on channelsurfing again.

Man, you guys. I just got into the wine and suddenly everyone is gone.
I would like Venus' dress if it had a cape in matching fabric, preferably with a giant purple "V" emblazoned on it. I'm halfway serious, actually. It would be so...Schoolhouse Rock (yes, I'm that old).

Peter Polansky is up a set and a break in his first Grand Slam main draw! Go Canuck!

Hoping it will break down? My guess (and that's about all it is) is that he is hoping to draw some errors off Gonzo's strong wing since Gonzo has a tendency to play a high-risk game and also the tendency to have meltdowns when he starts making a lot of errors.

Seems like you're right, f'clese. I can't believe Hewitt just took the fourth set; I thought he was dead meat after his performance in the second and third.
It looks like Patty Schnyder might pull out a win, though nothing she does could surprise me at this point.
If Polansky can win, packrat, that'll be a great result for him.

Watching the teen girls (the 16 yr old American WildCard and the Aussie) is so frustrating. The american keeps cramping but somehow winning.

Watching the teen girls (the 16 yr old American WildCard and the Aussie) is so frustrating. The american keeps cramping but somehow winning. I'm watching it too antrob. It's a crazy trainwreck and I can't take my eyes off of it. Venus seems to have had a lapse of attention. I need her to hurry up so I can go to bed. Watching two matches at once may turn out to have some lasting psychological effects I didn't anticipate. Things are getting a little hard to follow. ETA: Now Kerber and Gonzo have also requested trainers.

I feel like I need a trainer now too. Maybe a hot young pool boy who can lift my wineglass for me.
This is some seriously crazy stuff all happening at the same time.

I just remembered that there's no final set tiebreak, so those two girls on court six could develop into a Greek tragedy.

Now Gonzo's serving for the match.
And he wins. Crazy.
I'm going to bed. Good night to anyone who's still up. I'm hoping I can get up early and catch the tail end of the session.

Really--what does Adidas have against Ana? They put her in the most god-awful things and to make her look bad is quite a feat. Too bad she cannot play in the tank tops and shorts she wears for practice and interviews. Speaking of, Serena? Tie-dye? Too tight? Too short? Nothing about that dress was a good thing. And Jelena? Empire waist? Not a good idea for anyone. I, however, do like the most muscular look on her--if she trained correctly it will add to her stamina and she needed help there.
Still very, very sad that Lopez lost. So funny about the 70 minutes that everyone accounted for but weren't there. Really? No one noticed an extra 70 minutes? Glad to see Verdasco didn't have a problem with his first-round match. But Starace losing as well? The loss of the beauty of that potential 2nd round match is just a shame.
Relieved and very pleased that Gonzo made it through. I just love that guy. I wonder if Hewitt ever regretted keeping the roof open. Oh well, a five-setter against Gonzo after hip surgery is quite a good showing. Too bad he met a seed in the first round.
As for the coverage, how giddy is Chris Fowler? Love him.
eta: to weigh in on the JMdP question--I find him adorable and quite good looking.

I tivo the matches and watch them unspoiled in the morning so I'm just now catching up to the late night action. My non tennis fan husband was laughing at the 15 minute discussion of cramps and medical time outs I understood what all the former player/ current broadcasters were saying but as a fan there are a number of retirements on tour as is. Last years Rome Masters come to mind, if there were no medical timeouts they might increase. Or maybe players would learn to deal, who know. In any event that McHale/Moore match was a doozy. I'm glad the Australian won, if only b/c I don't know how you come back from an early career loss like that. I find JMdP adorable but not good looking. I like the color of Ana's dress (but my wardrobe is filled with saturated colors so I guess you have to take my opinion with a grain of salt ) but definitely agree that Serena's is a miss on all fronts. I'm not crazy about the color of Venus' dress (I don't love everything neon!) but the cut/style is pretty. Jelena's sack is the pits and I only saw Kirlenko's dress in stills and she's gone... I can't think of any other stand outs, either good or bad.
