Francie and tiki, what is most interesting to me is that the percentage made him come in right under Ruth. That seems, well, a little suspect. In the end, it would have been better if Seaver had gotten in unanimously (if the rumor about the three blank to protest Pete Rose's ineligibility is true) because then it would be over--a unanimous vote and no more worrying about Ruth.
Oh, francie is your brother praying that James comes to NY? (Is that even still an option? It was such big news a month or so back but I lost track.) I have a friend who has had Knicks season tickets for decades now. Through thick and thin I guess. I gave up on the Knicks when they signed Sprewell. The NBA lost me when they went through their "all thugs, all the time" late 90s. I will occasionally follow the Nets but I tend to stick more to college basketball when I follow basketball at all.

I think my brothers prayers are pretty much centered on the Dolans selling the team, he doubts they'll be answered but that's his most sincere wish at this point.
Both the family I was born into and the one I created are NBA obsessed. As far as college ball goes, I did my undergrad in Maine but my husband went to UNC so we have lots to cheer come March.

Hey! My art director went to Maine (she graduated in '84--funny thing is, she hates the cold now. I always ask how she went through four years of it). I always have to pick other schools to root for since Rutgers (inexplicably) cannot seem to put together a good men's team. It makes no sense; Big East, close to NYC and Philly, good Jersey high school basketball programs. I guess they all go to Seton Hall and St. John's but it is very annoying.
(Now, if people want to start talking hockey or soccer I would not be so chatty in this forum. My sales guy gave me quite the eye roll yesterday when it took my three tries to get "period" right .)

I went to school in Maine but I went to Bowdoin which actually had (has?) a great ice hockey team. But the the whole climate of big time college sports isn't something you go to a tiny liberal arts college for ; And I'm all aboard hating the cold, a sharp wind runs through suburban Atlanta and I'm running indoors!
It is weird how Rutgers can't field a good men's team...
And as far as soccer goes, I'm an awful mom b/c even though my kids want to play, I've yet to sign them up. I'm morally opposed to becoming a soccer mom!

I'm from Maine! But I'm smart enough to live in warm southern New Mexico now.
If it's true that MLB HOF votes are pre-determined, I'm disgusted. I don't take the HOF seriously, but still.
I'm with you, francie, though in my case I'd be a soccer aunt. I'm trying to force my sister to force her kids into baseball...and failing so far. Oh well. There's still time...

Tiki I remember that you spent a large part of your summer in Maine but I didn't know you were a native! Are you from southern, central or northern Maine? Today the cold has come to GA and I'm not pleased, you had the right idea in NM! My kids T-Ball team last year was a comedy of errors. My then 3 year old's first base running experience almost took him 1/2 a mile to the parking lot

HA! Last year I took a couple of friends to the ASG FanFest and they had a T-Ball game set up (it was great--we talked to some of the parents and their kids had been given uniforms and tickets for the whole family to come to FanFest, they were really pleased). Oh my goodness! I have never laughed so hard, and my pregnant friend got all teary at how adorable the kids were. A kid would hit that ball, forget to run, ALL the kids in the infield and outfield would go racing to where the ball was and then have no clue what to do when they got it. By that point, the kid who hit the ball would have been told to run to first base and then he wouldn't stop. Oh, it was priceless. I think I might start randomly looking for T-Ball games this summer just to put me in a good mood.

I adore T-ball stories. The last game I went to, there was a popup in the outfield, and terrified children running as far away from the ball as they could.
Yes, I'm a native Mainer (Mainiac?), francie. I'm from the far southern part of the state (York/Eliot/South Berwick area), so some Downeasters would class me among the Massholes! Anyway I love the place, and I miss it, but I just have no tolerance for cold, so I have to content myself with long (working) vacations.

Tiki I was going to make a joke about your being from southern Maine. Something along the lines of "No wonder you can't tolerate the cold, you might as well be from northern MA" but alas, you beat me to it!
I've got all sorts of pee wee sports bloopers stories. Right now we're playing basketball and between baskets scored in the wrong hoop, balls literally given to the opposing team (as in I have no idea what to do with this hot potato, you take it!) and players who have gone to wrong huddle we have a lot laughs early Saturday morning!

This really ought to go in the Haterade thread, but since it's not tennis:
I hate Kurt Warner. Hate him. I hate his beady eyes, his scrawny stupid arms, and his fucking imaginary friend and savior. And I would feel this way even if the Eagles weren't trailing at the half.
ETA and now the football season is officially over for me. I totally hate all the teams left, so I guess I'm screwed until baseball season starts. Pitchers and catchers report in 28 days!

Hee, now I think I'll go find some pee wee basketball games because that sounds like a great deal of fun to watch.
Poor Tiki. I, on the other hand, was really pleased that I liked all three teams left after the Eagles were out of it. I like Warner--he did right by the Giants, and the Giants did not do so right by him. And I think he's aging really well. Kerry Collins (another ex-Giant who's doing well now) looks a lot older, but the grey and scraggy face is a good look for him. There are so many religious types in football (and, I guess all sports)--the first thing McNabb says after a win was how he wanted to thank God. Meanwhile, I'm not so sure God is a football fan (witness that horrendous hit on McGahee. Ouch).

My husband was joking that the Eagles kicker's relationship with God sure was volatile since he abandoned him on that extra point Assuming that the pointing to the sky was about God and not a deceased relative! I should mention that the pee wee basketball scene also consists of some all stars in training. They are rare but much more advanced than I thought I'd see for the 4-5 year old set. We've seen head fakes, pump fakes (by a sweat band wearing 5 year old ) and between the leg dribbling!

Francie, do you think you could videotape a game? I would so pay to see some of that.

I'm pretty much over myself now, though I still have no interest in the Super Bowl. You're right that there are tons of super religious types in football, lt. I find Warner (and his wife) especially irritating, but believe me, Donavan bugs me too. I just wish they'd all keep it at home. That said, I do NOT mean to start any arguments about religion! So maybe I should just shut my mouth! Umm...the White Sox gave closer Bobby Jenks a fat one-year contract. That made me happy. I love me some Big Bobby.

Trust me, Tiki, I don't think Warner is any better about that then anyone else. Of course we then have Ray Lewis--realizing that he isn't being seen all the way on the bench while McGahee is surrounded by trainers and players of both teams so he has to come out onto the field, kneel down and pray for everyone to see. Oy. Doesn't even bother getting up and actually seeing how Willis was doing. (Yeah, he can go to the Cowboys because then there would be nothing standing in my way of actually liking the Ravens.) Always reminds me of Andre Agassi finally having enough of Michael Chang saying he was winning matches because God loved him best--just because they don't talk about it all the time in public doesn't mean they don't believe. Keep it at home, sports folks.
