Yes, if Serena just won her 13th, how is she going to win 9 more slams in two years? That would be a neat trick. Vera should give Mary some statistics lessons. Because according to Mary, Serena has already won this year's US Open, so that's 14. And clearly Serena will win the next 8 over the course of 2011 and 2012. It's so obvious I don't know why anyone else would even bother showing up to play really.

Sounds like I didn't miss much for that final. But I did get a much needed laugh over apocalipstick's "climb Marat like a tree" laziness comments. Girlfriend, I think you read my mind. Just don't repeat anything else you might have seen!

Just don't repeat anything else you might have seen! I'm saving that for my blackmail scheme! Found this on the ATP site. Now that's funny.

Awww, Serena made me tear up a little with the Venus-lending-her-a-necklace story. Don't know why, just the big-sisterness of it all. My little sister drives me bonkers but I'd lend her a necklace in the same situation--and then get exasperated when I never got it back. This is why I have stayed a Venus fan even while Serena usually annoys me (not in this case - this is cute, actually - just in general) I may not be a Roger fan but for NBC to run a feature to say that he's done is utter bullshit. I may wish it were true but it is definitely premature.

Awwww, Vera lost the doubles too. I was really hoping she'd win that to make her feel better.

It has helped his bh become a stronger weapon through the years. Conversely- because he is naturally who has to serve as a lefty it is one reason why his serve has traditionally not been as effective as a lefty serve would be- because the whole counter-intuitive body motion as well. It has become better through the years and can now sometimes be an effective tool for him- but imo it will always be the least natural stroke for him.
I would have liked for Vera to get the dubs as well.

So Mariana Alves was the ump for the women's final today. She was the umpire who was involved in the 2004 Serena/JCap match that ultimately led to Hawkeye. I'm pretty sure this is the first time she has umpired a Serena match since that controversy. Does anyone know if that is the case? I thought it was a very interesting dynamic, although not surprisingly, it really was never a factor today.

I don't think she has been the umpire at one of Serena's matches since 2004, until today. Serena was asked about it in her presser but didn't say too much - just that she was aware of the significance.

It's sort of an interesting decision on the part of the AELTC or whoever is responsible for assigning the umpires. Clearly they wanted it to be noticed or they wouldn't have chosen such a major, high profile moment to do this. If they just wanted to put an end to the practice of keeping the two apart, It could have been done at some other tournament, or during a match that wasn't a final. Even a doubles match would have done the trick. I'm not really sure what they were trying to accomplish, but it didn't seem to bother Serena.

So far it's another drama-free final.

Drama for me because I had to go into the office again. Finally home and able to watch. Rafa looks vicious out there but Tomas isn't surrendering.

I may wish it were true but it is definitely premature. But that's always been par for tennis. Whomever is comfortably situated at #1 will, inevitably, get nitpicked and Chicken Littled. If Nadal manages to win the USO this year, since he's clearly on his way to winning today, watch how his every mistake, his every loss, his every minor injury becomes OMG......HE'S OVER!! HE'S THROUGH!!! It's why the ones who can stay #1 year after year get my respect. Because the tennis "intelligentsia" always want to take them down.

I don't see Tomas coming back at this point. Too bad it hasn't been closer.
well said vallegirl. Also, a lot of those "intellegentsia" are general sports reporters who don't even care about tennis and often make fun of it IMO.

Which is why Federer taking them to task after his loss in the QF pleased me so much.
He isn't, but Rafa is being his full terrier self.
Hey Ted, we get it--people are watching the final match from Court Two. And there isn't a net!
eta: Darn. That was as "thrilling" as yesterday. Good for Rafa, but nothing in the match to sink my teeth into.
