Maria is a good player and good for the women's game, especially with the sisters and Kim out. But I'm not a fan. I'd prefer that the winner be Frannie, Marion or even Li Na.
In the interest of full disclosure I must confess to having a bias against fawning over tall blondes.

Actually I find Maria far more tolerable now that Yuri is out of the picture. I didn't realize how much of my disdain for her revolved around her overbearing father.
Furthermore, her fighting spirit and never-give-up attitude are quite admirable. I appreciate that she doesn't fall apart on the court like a lot of these youngin's. She could be down 6-0, 5-0, and she'd still be fighting. I LOVE that about her. I'm not at the point where I'd actively root for her, but for the first time ever, I wouldn't mind if she won. She truly will deserve it if she does.

You know I think that's it. I remember seeing him in his unibomber atire making his throat slitting motions and I was hoping that Maria would lose every single match she played from that point on. I couldn't tolerate him.

Hmm. That may be part of it. Yuri, like many tennis fathers, was real piece of work.

Hmmmm, I agree. I'd actually forgotten all about him. And her fiance is such an enthusiastic fan, that's nice.

The fawning early on bugged the hell out of me too. It seems like, generally speaking, tall blondes often get treated like the second coming when they show any promise at all. In Maria's case, as it turns out, she deserves the respect, so my lingering reservations are more an indictment of me than her. I have at least moved out of the "anyone but her" camp, so I'm growing. I won't mind if she wins, but I'm definitely pulling for Na Li above everyone else. The other three are about equal, except that Marion would have an added feel-good aspect that would be nice.

That's kind of how I feel about Wozniacki. She's such a nice girl and though her game bores me to tears, my negative feelings toward her revolve almost exclusively around how she's treated more than anything she's actually done. I still haven't gotten over how Wimbledon put her on Centre Court the day the Queen came, and put Serena on "Court Outer Space."
Serena was the #1 player in the world, the #1 seed, and the defending champ in singles. Oh, and she was also all of those things in doubles too. If ever there was a player who deserved to play on Centre Court that day, it was Serena Williams. Wozniacki hadn't so much as sniffed the second week of Wimby and was only the #3 player in the world.
I want to get over it. I don't want to have bad feelings toward Wozniacki for something she has no control over. But I just can't. There's something about knowing that for all of Serena's accomplishments, all one has to do to trump them is be cute and blonde and BAM, you're more worthy to play for the Queen.

The Maria taken-care-of checklist for me: 1. Overbearing/trigger-happy father: check 2. Questionable self-congratulatory celebrating: check 3. Fanning the wonder-blonde, attention-hungry flames: check 4. Shrill shrieking: NO CHECK
C'mon, Maria: make me a fan.
ETA: "Court Outer Space". Indeed. I had forgotten that debacle.

Yep and that's why Wimby lost a place in my heart. And, sadly, it's off my list of slams to visit. Sure, I'll tune in for the competition but no strawberries and cream for me.

And Wimbledon wonders why the Queen doesn't show up more often. She thinks tennis is "Caroline Wozzzzzz ....," when it could have been "Serena Fucking Williams." The poor Queen.
