Today was a pretty disappointing day for me, results-wise. Glad Rafa and Maria won--but I wasn't worried about them. Max and Daniel won their doubles (yeah!) but Max lost in mixed (to two old partners, how weird is that?) and Dolgo lost in both singles and doubles. Fer not only lost, he looked like crap doing so. Is the adidas player development program losing steam? Fer looked as uninterested today as Woz looked yesterday.
And then there was Delpo. As anyone without the Djokovic glasses on knew, not finishing last night was going to be good for Djoker and bad for Juan. As the Radio Roland Garros folk said (I was watching on mute and listening online), Del Potro's shots never had the bite they had yesterday. If only he'd been able to convert those break points in the third. . . Oh well.
But listening to Radio Roland Garros means that I got to listen to Mardy Fish out-Roddicking Roddick during the changeovers. What an unmitigated ASS! He got a warning because he smashed his racquet and the chair ump heard a crack and Fish did not let it go for the rest of the match. He ended up telling the chair umpire he shouldn't be chair umpiring. The crowd let him have it though. Really an embarrassing display.

I saw the initial exchange about the racquet, which was slightly irritating, but no big deal. I had no idea he kept going on about it. The funny thing is that the chair ump (who is Anne Keothevong's brother, by the way) told him during that initial exchange, that if Fish showed him the racquet, he would reverse his ruling. I take it Fish never took him up on that? These things always seem to happen when someone is losing badly. I'm sure it's just a coincidence.
This has been an interesting slam if you're into upsets, especially on the women's side. Sharapova is starting to look like she might do this, but there are still some strong possibilities in there with Azarenka, Li, and Kuzie. And I suppose if I mention Kuzie based on the way she's been playing lately, i have to mention Jankovic (grudgingly). We'll see.

So Troicki beat Dolgo despite a bout of food poisoning? Oy. The hobbled vs the weary next round - the winner likely being a lucky bastard semifinalist.

Don't know if it's the (drab) day here, or me, or all the things listed above, but I turned on the FO to see Delpo double fault to be broken in the 4th and hear Mary Carrillo over-emoting about something. I swear it wasn't on 5 minutes before I switched it over to Wembley.
What's going on with me? I don't think it's the funk acre is talking about, as I had my most devoted tennis years before the 2000s. Meh. Anyway - my little 3-yr old half-sleeping on my lap, soaking up our heritage on the pitch ain't so bad.

So that's why Troicki and Tispy had to retire in their doubles? I was wondering about that. Does anyone know why Feli and Granollers pulled out of doubles the other day?
oops, is it drab there? I'm watching the Brewers game and the roof is open and it looks like it's nice. Funny what 60 miles can do. . . (or the cameras are compensating for a darker day than it is--like last night's Nole/Juan match). eta: it was the cameras. They just showed the actual sky and it is indeed drab out there.

Yes - with random severe weather spots up in MN and southwest of us. Saturdays with the kids get looong when they think they're going to be outside, and - well - then, no.

OK, so I'm on-call tonight and terribly bored. I'm also depressed that Del Po didn't take out Djoker, and that Nadal is probably not going to win this title. And to top it off, Caroline, Kim, and Sam jacked up my WTA brackets!
Anyhoo, I decided to look at how badly I was doing in the pool and was SHOCKED to see that I was still in the mix. Looks like Kim, Caroline and Sam busted EVERYONE'S brackets.
Anyway, I'm just glad that I still have a good chance. I really need Sveta and Frankie to keep it together to have a shot. But if Vica takes the title, MOONCREEK will be the likely winner.

I'm rooting hard for Francesca today against Jankovic. I'm irrationally feeling a big good v. evil vibe there, but then I guess it's hard for anyone to be more likeable than Francesca.
I feel like most of the matches today could be either barnburners, or blowouts based on the psychological unpredictability of the competitors.

A classic no-tiebreak 5th setter with Montanes, and no tennis on the telly anwhere...

As usual Fognini brings the drama.
Is it just me or does that referee who came out look exactly like the US Open referee?

This Montanes/Fognini match is quite the match. I'm watching on my computer while Federer/Wawrinka play on my tv in the background.
ETA - Fognini finally takes it. Is the crowd booing? What did he do Fala?

Wow. It seemed like a questionable call earlier when the chair ump got out of her chair to advise Fognini that he could take an MTO in the middle of the game, but I'm not an expert on the rules. I assume it was within the rules. Even if it wasn't, Montanes had way too many chances after that to close it out, and he just could loosen up. Fucking stunning. The crowd is booing Fognini, but I just can't blame him. He fought like crazy, and he didn't even look like he was going to try to ask for an MTO before the umpire suggested it. The only thing he did that was questionable was the long delay when he first started cramping, but it was the umpire who chose not to penalize him beyond the initial warning. Also, I doubt someone who was consciously playing head games would have committed all those foot faults at the end.
ETA: Breezy, in the middle of his own service game, Fognini started cramping, and then stood there for over a minute grimacing and doubling over, but not serving. The chair ump gave him a warning, and then got out of her chair, walked over to Fognini (who was standing behind the base line), and appeared to tell him that he could take a medical time out, which he did. that's when the jeering started. After that, IIRC, he came back and won that game, and then they continued playing with Montanes tight and unable to capitalize on Fognini's severely limited movement until Fognini finally won it.
EATA: Apparently the situation was handled properly by the umpire and the referee. The rule states that if a play stoppage like this occurs in the middle of a game, it's up to the trainer to decide whether the injury is a cramp or a muscle pull. If it's determined to be a cramp, the player automatically forfeits the match, if it's determined to be a pull, then the player can get treatment and keep playing. Evidently the trainer decided it was a pull, however the commentators seem to think it was a cramp, and I'm inclined to agree. Fogini was allowed to continue playing because of the trainer's ruling. The commentators have reported that Rafa, who's the ATP player vice president, is very unhappy about what went down.

Just got TV coverage, I had RG radio but it kept stopping to buffer, but now Francie is trailing JJ, I was really hoping she'd repeat, we'll see...
