With the return of Serena and V, there's been some discussion about whether a win by either of them here would be an indication of weakness on the womens' tour.
It then occurred to me to wonder what the men's side have looked like if the top four or five guys had been out or badly affected by a serious injury for long stretches, the way Serena, V, Kim, Maria and Justine have been. You could make an argument that DelPo might have dominated, but IMO he's the only one who might have. Other guys like Tsonga, Sod, Verdasco, Davydenko and Roddick would probably have won a slam here or there, but I don't think they would have become what we think of as great champions.
That said, I think Tsonga, Sod et al would have made a better showing than Jankovic, Ivanovic, Safina and Woz (at least so far).

ETA: Okay, did any of you guys catch the ESPN interview that featured Fed and Evert? At the end it was so hilarious. Hannah Storm revealed that Evert cries whenever Fed loses. Evert laughed and said, "You know this, Roger. I'm a borderline stalker." It was very cute. Was that this afternoon on ESPN2, harry? I will look for it on my DVR. When they get into 6 hour coverage I record in standard-def so at least I will get something. Chris has always acted so impassive in public that she must indeed be a big Roger fan. Hee.

Yes, it was on this afternoon. I think it was during the Djokovic match. Chris was delightful and informal, sort of gossipy and jokey. Although I admit it makes me think less of her that she's friends with Hannah S.

She needs to do something about her hair. Gah! Thank God for ESPN3 since they cut away from Nole's match for that and boring ass Mahut/Isner. Some of us like to watch our favorites beat the shit out of their opponent thank you very much!

I went back and found it - it was right before Baghdatis's match point against Blake. They had the studio conversation on a mini screen alongside the match. Very cute. But I want Chrissy to dress a bit more office-like and less club-like (though maybe that was for Roger!)....

Ugh, Venus' outfit is horrendous. Why not make it in terry cloth if you're gonna go for that level of fug? Her game isn't looking great this morning either.
I'm grumpy.

I'm grumpy too. However, Vee has come back to 6-5 from being down 5-1. That has cheered me some.
Don't look directly at the gold zipper, tiki. It will infect you with bad taste.

I absolutely love what Serena is wearing and the Federer-ish sweater is a nice touch.
Anyone remember when they swapped taste? Early on, Serena was the one known for the strange outfits - the catsuit and the denim number come to mind - and I would love the dresses Venus would wear.
Meanwhile, I've generally been happy with what Serena has worn the last few years and it's usually something curvier women would want to wear.

I hate this pairing of Dick and Chris E. I'm grumpy too, this match put me in an awful mood, that won't lift until Venus wins this. Krumm came out awesome though and I could have totally appreciated it more if she wasn't playing Venus. Now I just need Venus to end this and soon and get off the court, before she gets injured or something.

I will be pissed as fuck if Venus loses this match. I will be so mad I know I'll have to stop watching until the men's final or women's if Serena gets there. Venus losing at Wimby just does my head in and I did the same thing last year. Why do you this to me, Venus?

I don't want to watch this because I'm so nervous. Krumm. Krumm, anyone but Venus and I'd be rooting for you hardcore. C'mon, Vee!

OMG!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! VENUS!!!
My heart was right to rip right out my chest and my hands were shaking watching these last few games with them. I feel bad for Krumm but ecstatic for Venus. I'm wired now and I should be sleeping. I'm so very, very relieved.

Whew, glad she won. I had to get in my car after the second set, so I was just following the score. That was some match. I had a feeling Kimiko might cause some problems. The flatness and angles she gets on her groundstrokes can be pretty startling, and then to add the way she was sneaking into the net and sticking absolutely every volley and half-volley in the first set, it was looking very grim for Venus for a while. While I was still expecting Venus to win the match, I was not expecting her to fight back and take the first set to a tiebreak.

I had to go to a meeting after the first set and was very nervous for Venus. Glad to see she pulled it out. If it was against any other opponent and I would have been for Kimiko, who is awesome.
Sounds like it was an exciting match so I hope to see the replay on TTC.

Okay, everybody, we need to come together to help Rafa. What the hell should he do to fix his hair? It looks so terrible these days, on court and off, that I find myself preferring his long, sweat dripped stringiness of days gone by. Should he go short? Surely there are Spanish hairstylists who can help this man.
ETA: We're not going to mention the armpit circles. That's a temporary, albeit unfortunate, problem.
