falafaclese, I have to ask--as i am constantly checking the radar, are you getting slammed by thunderstorms right now? Looks so nasty in your vicinity. It was totally overcast with a moderate intermittent rain in the morning and early afternoon, and then at around 3:00pm it started getting sunny. It's sunny right now.

This match! What am I going to do if it's Tipsy vs. Djoker in the semis? Stay in the hospitality room and eat lots of sushi?
Tipsy just fell--normally I would never root for a player to be hurt but this guy? I hope he broke his ankle and a gay woman doctor is the surgeon on call. . .
eta: why do people root for him? Even if they don't know his hate-mongering, they just witnessed his gamesmanship timeout. If I knew nothing about either of these guys I'd still be fully behind David right now.
falafaclese, I'm glad those orange and red blobs on the radar weren't thunderstorms in your area.
Oh, thank goodness. Turns out this result mattered to me more than last night's.

Here's an interesting article about Taylor Townsend the #1 women's junior and how the USTA didn't want her to compete at the US Open and wouldn't fund her trip there. I'll admit I was surprised to see a bit of a pudgy stomach on her, but it's not like she suddenly ballooned up. The USTA was well aware of her fitness issue and only just now started to step in. Bizarre timing.

Maybe it isn't the first time they've stepped in but it's more visible this time because the family is talking about it? Knowing nothing but that article and seeing how she's looking, I'm on the USTA side. (from the article)

Yay for wee David!
I can't believe I'm rooting for Lurch.

Hmm. I'm not sure that fat fitness shaming is the way to encourage youngsters to participate in sports and is the reason why so many aren't excercising at all. After all, she's won major junior titles and is ranked #1 in the world!
A chubby kid sitting on the couch watching her win might be inspired to get moving to win too. And IIRC, Martina Navratilova wasn't the fittest when she started out.
Many kids want to play sports professionally because they prefer a career where rankings and results (which are public and objective) speak for themselves, rather a career chock full of private and subective judgments. I get where the USTA is coming from but publicly shaming this young, accomplished athlete is not cool at all. There has to be a better way to address this issue. YMMV

But which was first? The family going to the press or the USTA? The USTA has a right to explain why they made their decision if the family went to the media for sympathy. But if the USTA went to the media to make their "we're all about the fitness" stance public, that wouldn't be right at all. But I just can't see that making sense. And I'm pro-fitness over results. Being #1 in the world isn't as important as being healthy. Interestingly, it seems to be working. If you look at pictures from this week vs. pictures from previously she's looking quite good (and I mean good in a fit way). Some of her older pictures are a bit alarming for a potentially professional athlete.
Some of these points are absolutely insane. I'm fully behind Delpo but, my goodness, beautiful shots from both players.
eta: Delpo! You have to win this set. You're not coming back from two sets down. C'mon!

Am I ever happy Ferrer came through! I had to leave after Tipsarevic was up 3-love in the fifth - and leaving angry at the chair and linesman completely botching a 30-all call.
Poor Delpo.
Re; Taylor Townsend - this is when I get pissed off. I honestly don't care how a player's physique looks if that player is able to do the required work on the court. If a player gets tired in the match, fitness does need to be improved but a chiseled six-pack doesn't mean you can last to a final set tiebreaker.

Alas, Delpo looks like he's given up.
eta: Okay, he's fighting back...making the third set interesting.

Talk about a misleading score!
del Potro and Stosur both found out how much love NYers have when you vanish the king (Federer) and queen (Serena) in their final and back it up with amazing shows in defeat.
Contrast that with Djokovic, who seems forever to have the crowd against him here... and given the other semifinalists, I don't see that changing this year.

I have to wonder if Del Po will ever get over this hump. I certainly hope so.
As for Taylor I'm of the mind that they could have worked together to get her fitness in check. Pulling her from tournaments and preventing her from getting a wild card to the US Open or play a tournament to get into the main draw, is ridiculous. She's been big for awhile and maybe this was their drastic measure, but she seems like she'd be amiable to doing what they want either way. It's just odd that they really seemed to not want her playing in the US Open, at all. She's winning even if her fitness isn't great. That speaks for itself and maybe if she'd played the main draw and gotten spanked it would have given her bigger incentive to get in shape.

Crazy, crazy match between Ferrer and Tipsy. I actually had to turn the channel during the 5th set tie-break because I couldn't bear the thought of Tipsy winning. I"ve always thought it was really cute when Ferrer put his shirt or towel in his mouth but this? Ewwwwww....

Leander Paes was extremely gracious in defeat to the brothers Bryan. Did he hire a PR rep to rework his image?
I didn't realize that with this win the Bryans have more grand slams than any other men's doubles team -- surprassing the Woodies. They (Bryans) aren't my favs but I'll give credit where it's due.
