They didn't air the women's speeches? They were really good. Vika was extremely gracious in defeat and Serena's was really good--she said she'd prepared a concession speech while she was playing, heh. For those who are as happy as I am, or if you just want to read something sweet, The Daily Record, a Scottish newspaper, live blogged the match. It's a quick read but you can really feel how happy the writer is. awwww, the Open's over. . .

Back when Andy would curse Brad out during matches like he was wishing him a good morning, I never thought I would be overjoyed for him to win a GS. But I am. Had no idea how vested I was until the wheels started to come off in sets 3 &4.My Dad adored Ivan, so growing up I saw a lot of him. SO happy he is part of game again& his "smile" made my night!

Regarding the rankings, Andy passed Rafa at #3 when he made the final. Berdych is now #6, passing Tsonga.
I must say that this entire day feels so weird. As weird as Andy's reaction to winning, actually.

What'd he do? I wasn't watching.
I don't give a fuck for Murray, but a Djokovic GS final loss is too awesome for words.

I was watching and I didn't notice anything weird. And it turns out he was missing his Rado watch that he had to wear for the ceremony, not his shoes. Luckily Kim knew where it was.
I didn't realize it until I read it on Twitter but both Gold medalists won the Open. Interesting.

Andy looked like he lost after the match. He barely smiled. I guess that's what people found weird?
He's quite a grumpy young man.

Well, I just came home from work so I missed it all except for the most excellent coverage from you folks! Since I really couldn't root in this one, maybe that was just as well.
Yes, acre, pretty much the way I feel now too. I guess I'm glad Andy finally won a GS under the circumstances (since it was against Djoker anyway) and I also didn't want to see him lose this from 2 sets up, again, under the cirucmstances.
I did attempt to record it, but smart me, made a "manual" TIVO recording - ending at 8PM! No ending to it!
So some channels cut off the women's speeches? I agree, they both were great. I especially think Vika increased her fandom in NY by hers.

So I went to the men's semis, and Djokovic was making a huge deal about the wind on Saturday and it seemed like a repeat of that attitude today. That plus the injury timeout right before Murray served for the championship at 5-2 made me root for Murray. It's nice to have a first-time GS champion. I would have preferred Ferrer, but oh well.

The women didn't get speeches, Vika got to say a few things, then Mary started talking and took up too much time before she got to Serena. Then Serena only got to say she was preparing her runner's up speech and how Vika was playing great. Then that was it. Serena asked if she could say more, Mary said one second, the second never came. CBS was rushing everything, I know, but still. I wanted the usual speeches about thanking their teams and the crowd and the sponsors, etc. It's a little thing that pissed me off.
And why was Mary the one down on court anyway?
It was nice to see the men get to have their say. And I liked Andy's reaction. He didn't fall to his back or to his knees, he squatted in disbelief and probably a good deal of relief. He got his jumping around out of the way at the Olympics. Plus he looked very sore and tired.

I was just reading that guru! I think the section on PMac is well said. I really don't know why ESPN thinks he's a great commentator anyway.
Maybe next year they'll replace him with Roddick.

That was a great win for Murray. I almost feel like it was only fitting that the match itself was as massive a struggle as all the years that led up to the match. It would have felt a little weird if the major title he had been struggling so long to obtain was as straightforward as his win in the final at the Olympics. I have come to like Andy, so I'm unreservedly happy for him. I've been wanting Great Britain's long national nightmare to be over so that Andy can relax a bit. I seem to be most attracted to players with snarly attitudes on the court lately (or maybe always?). I swear it's no reflection on me.
Is anyone buying that last bit?

I agree, the crowd wasn't against her during the match as much as they were for Serena but she got a huge round of applause after she talked.
When I put on the live video just in case CBS didn't air the trophy ceremony and I saw him limping to his box I should have said hobbled to his box. He looked like his feet were walking over hot coals--I imagine they went straight into an ice bath.
Of course, because opposites attract. . . (hmmm, did I just unintentionally diss your boyfriend? Did not mean to).
eta: thanks for linking to Wertheim's article. Here's the line that got me in ESPN's response to keeping PMac on the payroll:
We do see through it, but what's our recourse? We think it stinks but our opinions don't matter so how is that a viable response from ESPN?
Meanwhile, it does crack me up a bit that as entertaining a writer Wertheim is, he's that bad at being in front of the camera. He was dull as dishwater at the Olympics and never had anything even close to relevant to say.
Oh, and if anyone didn't click through to read the article about Ancic, do it. Actually made me tear up a bit and if he does become part of the Columbia tennis team (although I doubt as a player--as they said, law school doesn't leave a lot of free time) I'm gonna go to a match.

I saw a pic today, I believe Andy was in his p-ess confe-ence, with the nicest smile I have ever seen on him. Not just happy, but looking like a guy you'd like to know, and who you'd be happy fo-. That helps, plus omg "no GB man wins a Slam since dinosau-s walked the land", wow will I be glad to be done with that. Not that I think the commentato-s will let it go, but. And anyway, I wasn't gonna be tickled and giddy about this match in any event, so good going Andy. Much, much bette- than the continued futility and woe-is-me(media), so I guess given the options I am happy. Not like I especially wanted Djok to win.
