I feel sorry that Sharapova has suffered so many injuries, but I still dislike her dull game. I'm mean like that. But I also think she's a better champion-type player than Jankovic or Ivanovic, and the Williams sisters don't play that much anymore.

I'm a Sharapova hater who has found myself missing her these last few months. It's always better to have all contenders in a slam draw so I'm sorry to hear she is still injured. Her ongoing should saga is sounding similar to Capriati's and I certainly hope the situation isn't that serious. Tennis needs her now, she's only player on a level with the Williamses (though she is a cut below)-- the Serbs and the other Russians just don't have that champion's mentality (though I'm hoping Safina proves me wrong).
Tiki, why do you say the WS don't play much anymore? I think they both played more last season than they have in years, particularly Venus who actually played a full fall schedule for the first time since forever. I feel like both women have found a second gear in their late 20s.

I generally dislike Sharapova and have found myself missing her too, curly. She is much younger than Capriati was when her shoulder came undone so she does have that in her favor.
Apparently there is some controversy surrounding Alizet Cornet's Hopman Cup outfit. It's supposed to be both sheer and short, I can't find any pics of it online, but Margaret Court (among others) was not pleased.
Venus has not done well at AO (relatively speaking of course) so I would love for her to add something new to her trophy case. And her game seems to be as strong as it has been in years.

When I was talking about the WS, curly, I meant that they don't play as heavy a schedule as the average WTA player -- or at least it seems so to me, without looking up the stats. They do seem to have played more recently. I'd like to see them more too.
It's always been interesting to me to read the various opinions on how much the WS (or anyone else) should play. Personally, I'd like to watch top players in as many tournaments as possible -- but if any given player is happier and more fulfilled playing 75% of top tournaments, or even 50%, that's an individual choice that I respect. JMO.

Here's a pic of the offending garment. I can see how it could be revealing during movement, and probably wasn't a great choice for a world-class sporting event, but I'm kind of surprised at the level of the response. I have issues with Margaret Court's social views though, so maybe I'm minimizing because she's involved.

I'm not the biggest Sharapova fan - but I do enjoy her when she's playing and playing against an aggresive female. I f'kn loved her AO match against Serena and the Wimbledon match against Venus that same year.
I like her fight. I like that she called out Ana Ivanovic in last year's AO for not fighting enough for that match. I'd rather see someone like Sharapova actually "win" a match than Ana play better than a nervous/anxious opponent like Safina in the Roland Garros final. It reminds me too much of the Myskina/Dementiava Roland Garros final.
And with the results lately, it seems Venus may be the favorite, but like with the WS, you never know. The only time she's the favorite and actually goes on to win is Wimbledon. Let's at least hope that the sisters are on opposite sides with Sharopova out now.
What are Court's social views?

She has made what are in my opinion homophobic statements, and campaigned against laws that were supposed to provide gays and lesbians with equal rights as couples.

She also made some comments as Martina N was winning her 9th Wimbledon that Martina was not a good role model because she was gay. It felt to me like a particularily pissy choice to make those statements during Martina's historical moment.
I too am bummed out about Sharapova; I'm hoping this doesn't become one of those lingering, constant issues because while I don't find her game to be terribly exciting at least she really seems to want it. I don't find most of the top women's games too exciting these days but Maria isn't glittery and a mental mess. So I give her credit for that.

Yes, Margaret Court isn't anyone whom I have much in agreement with. She just happened to be the most high profile commentator in the article I read. Thanks for the pic, it's not particularly short but the sheerness and nip slip factor must have been pretty high.

Hopefully I didn't come off like I was discounting Court's position on this particular issue because of my problems with her other views. If so, it was unintentional.

I thought the shirt looked uncomfortable. I can imagine it sagging in the front, bunching at the sides, flying up. There is a reason women's tennis outfits are tighter.

I have an AO question - don't the seedings come out in a day or so? and therefore will Roger remain number 2 over Djoker who is playing this week? I would think so but just wondering. I think it would be too late for the rankings to change...?

Cornet's top looks like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen -- look out for the flailing boobies, everyone! That said, Margaret Court? What a charmer. Except, not.

I realize that all you people with TTC are used to getting to see classic matches (*grumble, grumble*, jealous) but, for those who don't get to see them: ESPN Classic will be airing a bunch of AO matches this Sunday, starting at 7am EST. Included will be: Pete breaking down against Courier in the 1995 quarterfinal (I'll stock up on tissues 'cause that one is a tearjerker), some Andre, some Williams sisters, some Seles, even some El Aynaoui (okay, that one is because of Roddick).

Hm, I guess the shirt is very floopy around the neck, but I'm assuming (perhaps wrongly) that she's wearing a bra so what's the worst that can happen? Seems like a bit of a non-issue - but I'm all for anything that gets people talking.
ETA: As far as Sharapova goes, I -like- disliking her and miss her when she's gone! So I'm hoping for a speedy recovery.
